Long Balls Sink Flames Against Wright State

Three Raider Home Runs Lead WSU to Sweep

FAIRBORN, Ohio – Early offense for Wright State continued to set the tone in the series finale Sunday.  The Raiders scored five runs over the first three innings, including three home runs, on their way to a 5-2 win and a sweep of UIC.

Ryan Hampe and Chris Papapietro each had two hits for the Flames.  Fred Gosbeth surrendered all five Wright State runs and took his first loss of the season (5-1).  Jordan Krueger, Sam Menegat, and Alex Padilla combined to throw three hitless innings with four strikeouts out of the bullpen.

Wright State (32-13, 14-7 Horizon) outscored UIC (18-19, 11-9 Horizon) 13-0 in the first four innings over the three game set.  The Flames dropped to third place in the conference, two games behind next weekend's opponent, Milwaukee, for second.

How it Happened
  • Wright State scored single runs in the first and second innings.  They slugged their way to three more in the third on three solo home runs.
  • UIC did all their damage in the sixth.  Ryan Lin-Piestrup singled ahead of a Scott Ota walk.  After a wild pitch, Hampe singled in a run and Derrick Patrick plated another on a fielder's choice.  That chased Raiders starter Zane Collins, and Tristan Haught ended the threat.
  • One-out singles by Sean Dee and Papapietro in the seventh gave the Flames hope of a rally, until consecutive groundouts to third ended the inning.
  • The Flames loaded the bases in the ninth off Jake Schrand.  A walk and two singles set the table for the top of the order, but the #2 hitter Lin-Piestrup struck out and Ota flied out to end the game.
Notable
  • UIC left 10 men on base, scoring just twice off of nine hits and four walks.
  • Matt Bottcher, Lin-Piestrup, and Patrick each stole a base.
  • The Flames have lost five straight, and 16 of their last 19, on the road at Wright State (including Horizon League tournament games at Nischwitz Stadium).
  • Gosbeth, making his second start of the season, allowed eight hits, walked one, and did not strike out a batter.
  • Hampe had the Flames' sole extra-base hit, a fourth inning double.
On Deck
  • The Flames will step out of conference for a Tuesday afternoon contest at Notre Dame.
  • The game will start at 5:00 Central, and can be seen on the ACC Network Extra.
  • UIC will return home for a pivotal weekend series with Milwaukee starting Friday at 6:35 pm.
