Flames Downed by Valparaiso, 9-6

UIC drops first home contest of the season

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (15-16) was handed its first loss at home on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 9-6 decision against former Horizon League foe Valparaiso (12-14). The Crusaders grabbed seven runs in the first inning and never trailed, despite an attempted late comeback by the Flames in the seventh.

Game Highlights
  • The Crusaders were dealt six walks and two hit by pitch, while also recording one hit to get a big number early, putting up seven runs in their first at bat.
  • The visitors grew their lead in the top of the second with a leadoff home run, 8-0.
  • The Flames got on the board in the bottom of the third. Lexi Watts started things off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a popup from Skylee James and crossed the dish on a single from Kayla Wedl, 8-1.
  • Tara McElligott led off the bottom of the fifth with her sixth homer of the year, making it 8-2. Two batters later Wedl walked and advanced to third after a Valparaiso error off the bat of Alyssa Griman. A wild pitch scored Wedl and moved Griman to second, 8-3.
  • Valparaiso tacked on another run in the top of the sixth with a solo shot over the center-field wall, 9-3.
  • UIC put together a one-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs off three hits. Wedl and James found the gaps in the outfield for back-to-back doubles, scoring one, and Griman followed it up with her third long ball of the year, 9-6. The next two batters struck out swinging to end the rally, and the game with a win for the Crusaders.
Facts & Figures
  • The two teams ended the day even in hits, recording eight apiece. Wedl was the lone Flame to register a multi-hit performance with two. Watts, McElligott, James, Griman, Schyler Ek and Cassie Kaelber each ended with one.
  • Wedl and Griman led with two RBI apiece, while McElligott took home one.
  • Jennah Speth got the start and took her first loss of the season, pitching 0.1 innings and allowing five earned runs. Allie Trudeau pitched 0.2 innings, allowing three earned runs off two hits. Marley Hanlon pitched the remainder of the game, dealing 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run off six hits while striking out four.
