Rochester, Mich. – The UIC softball team (16-18, 7-2 HL) dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon to Horizon League foe Oakland (10-20, 3-8 HL). After falling into a 6-2 hole in the first inning of game one, the Flames fought back to tie the game in the top of the sixth, but the Golden Grizzlies responded with another run its next at bat to defeat UIC, 7-6. In game two, Oakland contained the Flames to just three hits, handing UIC its second loss of the day, 5-0.
Game One Highlights
- The Flames brought two across the plate in their first at bat. Lexi Watts started off with a walk, stole second, and came around to score on a towering double from Skylee James. Kayla Wedl followed with another double, putting James at third, and a walk for Alyssa Griman loaded the bases. Jasmine Willis flew out to left, allowing James to tag up and come home, 2-0.
- Oakland took over the lead in their half of the first, scoring six runs off of five hits and a UIC error.
- UIC tied it with four runs in the top of the sixth. Wedl batted a hard-hit ball to the pitcher with one out and stole second. Griman, Willis and Claire Crane all followed with walks, scoring Wedl, 6-3. Schyler Ek put a ball up the middle to bring in Griman and Willis and put UIC within one, 6-5. Emily Wetzel grounded out to second, but Crane was able to cross home plate and bring the game to a tie at six.
- The Golden Grizzlies broke the tie in their half of the sixth, as a leadoff single moved over on a pair of grounders and scored on a single up the middle, 7-6.
- Tara McElligott led off with a walk to start UIC's final at bat, but two line drives and a grounder ended the game.
Game One Facts & Figures
- The Golden Grizzlies put up 11 hits to UIC's five. Ek and Wedl took credit for two each, while James grabbed the remaining tab.
- Ek finished with a pair of RBI, while James, Willis, Crane and Wetzel each drove in one.
- Allie Trudeau got the start and took the loss, allowing two earned runs off three hits. Karissa Frazier pitched 5.1 innings in relief, giving up two earned runs off nine hits while striking out five. Marley Hanlon pitched the remaining 0.2 innings, surrendering one hit.
Game Two Highlights
- The Golden Grizzlies strung together three hits in their first at bat to take an early 2-0 lead.
- A double and a single drove in another run for Oakland in the bottom of the third, 3-0.
- James singled to center at the start of the fourth and Wedl put down a bunt at the left field line to give the Flames two on with no outs. Griman sacrifice bunted to move both runners over, but the next two Flames went down in order to end the opportunity for UIC.
- Oakland's lead grew to five in the bottom of the fifth. The Golden Grizzlies strung together two singles and a walk, while also taking advantage of a passed ball, 5-0.
Game Two Facts & Figures
- UIC was outhit, 7-3. Wedl was responsible for two of the three, while James came away with one.
- Hanlon got the nod in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing two earned runs off three hits. Jennah Speth came on with one out in the bottom of the second and pitched the remainder, allowing two earned runs off four hits in 4.2 innings.
