NILES, Ohio — UIC got its offense back on track Sunday afternoon and the Flames registered 14 hits and three home runs en route to an 8-3 victory in the series finale at Youngstown State. The victory snapped a brief two-game skid for UIC and helped the Flames leap back into first place in atop the Horizon League standings.
Derrick Patrick and
Ryan Hampe both collected three hits with a home run in the win. Patrick, who was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, scored four of UIC's eight runs.
Scott Ota went deep for the third time in four games for the Flames, as well. Ota and
Thomas Smart both had multi-hit performances.
On the bump,
Fred Gosbeth allowed just one run on one hit to the Penguins (7-24, 4-8 Horizon League) over 4.1 IP in relief to notch the victory.
How It Happened
- The Flames collected an early run Sunday, scoring in the top of the first inning. Patrick set the table with a one-out single before proceeding to steal second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch. With two away, freshman Ryan Hampe singled to left field to stake UIC to a 1-0 lead.
- The Penguins scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to briefly take the lead, but the Flames were able to even the ledger on one swing in the top of the third. Ota belted his career-high ninth home run of the season to the opposite field in left to even the score at two runs apiece.
- UIC continued to add to the lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth. Patrick doubled with one down and Ota was intentionally walked. Hampe was hit by a pitch to load the bases before David Becker was plunked to bring home a run. Alex Dee added a sacrifice fly in the inning to give the Flames a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Blaze Glenn hit a solo home run for YSU to cut the deficit to a run.
- The visitors created more separation with three runs in the top of the seventh. Patrick and Hampe both his their first home runs of the season, and for Hampe it was the first of his young career. Later in the inning, Becker scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Joshua Figueroa. UIC added one more insurance run in the top of the eighth. Patrick walked, Ota singled and Hampe was intentionally walked before Dalton Earich uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Patrick to score and increase the lead to five runs. That is where it would end, with an 8-3 victory for the Flames.
Notable
- Derrick Patrick is the first UIC player to score four times in a single game since David Cronin scored four times, also at Youngstown State, on April 21, 2017. The Flames won that game, 23-2.
- Patrick became the fifth player to record three hits in a game this spring. Ryan Hampe did it for the second time. Scott Ota leads the Flames with four games with three hits and he is tied for the team lead with 10 multi-hit games (Matt Bottcher).
- Patrick batted .500 (6-for-12) in the three-game series at Youngstown State.
- Ota extended his hitting streak to 10 games Sunday. He has kept the streak alive with an extra-base hit in each of the last four games.
- The Flames tied a season high with three home runs Sunday, but it was the first time that they were hit by three different batters (Ota, Patrick and Hampe). UIC hit three home runs in a 10-4 victory at Milwaukee on March 29 and in that game Ota homered twice and David Becker had the other.
- The Flames are 4-0 when hitting two-or-more home runs this spring.
- UIC had 14 hits Sunday and it has registered at least 10 hits in seven of 11 Horizon League games. When reaching double digits in the hit column, the Flames are 5-2 against League opponents.
- Fred Gosbeth has earned a victory out of the bullpen in each of his last three appearances dating back to March 26 against Northern Illinois. He has allowed just one earned run over 8.0 IP in those three outings against NIU, Northwestern and Youngstown State.
- UIC is 11-0 when leading after six innings and 12-0 with a lead after seven.
On Deck
- UIC will travel to take on Northern Illinois in DeKalb on Tuesday afternoon.
- The Flames will resume the conference slate on Friday night, when Northern Kentucky comes to Granderson Stadium to open up a three-game series.
