CHICAGO – On a rain-splashed afternoon at Granderson Stadium, UIC took an early lead and never looked back en route to a 10-4 series-clinching victory over Youngstown State.
Scott Ota cranked out his eighteenth home run of the season, while a total of six different Flames (23-20, 15-10 Horizon League) drove in runs for the victors.
How It Happened
- UIC's defense thwarted an early scoring chance for Youngstown State. Blaze Glenn doubled with two down and he tried to score from second base on a base hit to right field. Scott Ota came up the ball and made a one-hop throw to Joshua Figueroa at home, who blocked the dish and applied the tag to end the inning.
- The Flames then scored in the first inning for the second time in as many games in the series. With Chris Papapietro on second base with two away, Ryan Hampe reached safely on an error on YSU's third baseman. Papapietro scored and Hampe advanced to second on the miscue. The next batter, Figueroa, launched a double off the base of the wall to the opposite field in right to bring in Hampe and give UIC a 2-0 lead.
- The home team added another run on one swing in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alex Dee blasted the second pitch of his at-bat off the foul pole in left field for a towering home run, his second of the season. The home run gave the Flames a 3-0 cushion.
- The Penguins got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. YSU's Steven D'Eusanio countered Dee's blast and hit a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit to two.
- Â UIC scored five more in the bottom of the seventh to blow the game open. Derrick Patrick hit a ground-rule double to left field and the Penguins elected to intentionally walk Ota with first base open. Hampe made YSU pay for the decision with a two-run double inside the third-base bag and into left field. Sean Dee and Ryan Lin-Peistrup later drove in runs with infield singles and a third run scored an errant throw from Penguin shortstop Phillip Glasser.
- Youngstown State pushed across an unearned run in the top of the eighth. Lucas Nasonti doubled, stole third and scored on an errant throw. The Penguins looked to add on after another double, but Figueroa threw out a would-be base stealer to end the inning.
- Ota helped the Flames reach double digits in the run column with one mighty swing in the bottom of the frame. After Chris Papapietro walked, Ota launched his eighteenth home run of the season over the berm beyond the fence in right field for a towering two-run blast that pushed the lead to eight runs at 10-2.
- YSU scored twice in the top of the ninth to dictate the final margin of victory for UIC of six runs.
Notable
- Scott Ota tied UIC's single-season record with his 18th home run of the season. He is now tied with Bart Babineaux, who accomplished the feat in 2006. Ota is the first player in the Horizon League to register at least 18 home runs in a single season since Babineaux in 2006.
- Ota has hit safely in 24 of 25 Horizon League games. He has reached base safely in 28 consecutive games. Twelve of his 18 home runs have come in conference play. Three have come against Youngstown State.
- Derrick Patrick had two of UIC's eight hits Saturday. The Chicagoan is batting .476 with 10 hits in five games against Youngstown State this season.
- Four Flames scored two runs apiece and the top four hitters in UIC's lineup – Patrick, Chris Papapietro, Ota and Ryan Hampe – combined to score seven of the team's 10 runs.
- Joey Fredrickson threw at least 7.0 innings for the second consecutive outing and the fourth time overall this spring. The right-hander allowed one earned run and struck out four.
- UIC is 6-0 when scoring at least 10 runs this season and 16-0 when scoring at least six times.
- Youngstown State outhit the Flames, 9-8. It was the fourth time UIC won despite getting outhit by the opposition, and the second time in a three-game span.
- The Flames scored two first-inning runs and they have outscored opponents 33-20 in the first frame this spring.
On Deck
- The series will continue on Sunday afternoon at 12:05 p.m.
- UIC is expected to send senior Patrick Martin to the mound. He's likely to be opposed by YSU's Marco DeFalco.

The group includes: David Becker, Joey Fredrickson, Riley Hebert, Patrick Martin, Noah Masa, Scott Ota, Alex Padilla, Derrick Patrick, Danny Riley, Dominic Smith and Braeden Toikka.
