Flames Rally to Defeat NKU, 6-2

UIC scores six unanswered runs to even the series at a game apiece

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – UIC trailed by two runs after four innings, but the Flames mounted a comeback that featured six unanswered scores to overtake Northern Kentucky and topple the Norse, 6-2.

Derrick Patrick led the offensive attack with three hits, including his third home run of the season. Sean Dee's check-swing double down the right-field line in the top of the sixth inning gave the Flames (25-21, 17-11 Horizon League) the lead for good.

Northern Kentucky (14-39, 12-17 Horizon League) produced 11 hits in the ballgame, but the Norse left 14 runners on base in the loss.

How It Happened
  • Will Haueter continued to swing a big bat in the series as he drove in the game's first run on Friday. He singled home Andrew Bacon from second base with a base hit through the middle to give Northern Kentucky a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. UIC's Joey Fredrickson limited the damage and stranded a pair of runners with the help of a strikeout and a routine ground ball to first baseman Thomas Smart.
  • The Norse added a run to the board in the bottom of the fourth. Collin Luty singled to right field to score Preston Pilat from third base with one away. NKU would go on to load the bases in the frame, but Fredrickson picked up a strikeout and got Haueter to ground out to third base to end the inning and strand three more
  • The offense finally came to life for the Flames in the top of the fifth. Sean Dee singled to right field and two batters later Patrick collected his third hit of the game in as many at-bats, and this one left the field for a two-run home run that tied the game.
  • UIC took its first lead of the ballgame in the top of the sixth. Smart walked with one out and he was on second base with two down and Dee at the plate. The second baseman tried to check his swing, but wound up making contact and doubling down the right-field line, allowing Smart to score to give UIC a 3-2 advantage.
  • The visitors produced another multi-run inning in the top of the seventh. Patrick and Ryan Lin-Peistrup walked, unintentionally, before Scott Ota was intentionally awarded first base ahead of Ryan Hampe. The catcher delivered a high chopper to the right side that allowed Patrick score. The next hitter for the Flames, Chris Papapietro, delivered an RBI single to left field that plated Lin-Peistrup and pushed UIC's advantage to three runs at 5-2.
  • The Flames scored in the fourth consecutive inning with a run in the top of the eighth. With the bases juiced, NKU's Joe Martin uncorked a wild pitch that got away far enough and allowed David Becker to come home and push the UIC lead to four runs.
Notable
  • Derrick Patrick collected his third three-hit game of the season, and the second against an Horizon League opponent. He also accomplished the feat at Youngstown State on April 7.
  • Patrick's game-tying home run in the fifth inning was his third long ball of the season. He is now tied with David Becker for second on the team.
  • Scott Ota, who leads the team with 18 home runs, has hit safely in 26 of 28 Horizon League games in 2019.
  • Thomas Smart hit his second triple of the season in the top of the ninth inning. He is tied with Ota and Chris Papapietro for the team lead in that category tomorrow.
  • Joey Fredrickson picked up his sixth win of the season on the mound for the Flames. He allowed eight hits, but walked only one and struck out five NKU hitters.
  • Fredrickson is tied with Jacob Key for the team lead with six wins on the bump.
  • Fred Gosbeth (1.0), Mark McCabe (2.0) and Alex Padilla (1.0) combined to throw 4.0 scoreless innings in relief of Fredrickson.
  • Friday's victory away from home was the first for UIC since April 9 at Northern Illinois.
  • The Flames are now 17-5 all-time against Northern Kentucky and 6-3 all-time at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
On Deck
  • UIC will conclude the regular season at Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
  • The Flames are slated to send left-hander Patrick Martin to the mound. In his last start against the Norse on April 13, Martin went a career-high 5.2 IP and surrendered a lone earned run on four hits. He struck out a career-high six that day.
  • The Flames can still secure the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Horizon League Championship, and with it, a first-round bye.
  • To do so UIC will need to win at NKU on Saturday, and get help via a Youngstown State victory over Milwaukee.
  • The game between YSU and MKE also begins at 11 a.m. in Niles, Ohio.
