Flames Tie Horizon League Win Record in WSU Finale

UIC Shuts out Raiders, 6-0 for series win

DAYTON, Ohio – The UIC softball team (30-21, 20-4 HL) wrapped up the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 6-0 shutout at Wright State (22-33, 9-15 HL). The win was UIC's 20th conference victory of the season, tying the program record set by the 2017 squad.

Game Highlights
  • After four scoreless innings, the Flames got one run across the plate to take a 1-0 lead. Cassie Kaelber batted a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lexi Watts, and took third on a grounder by Kayla Wedl. A double off the bat of Skylee James drove in Kaelber, giving UIC the advantage.
  • The Flames tacked on another five runs in their final at bat. Watts drew a walk and James singled out to left, and another single from Tara McElligott drove in Watts from second, 2-0. Claire Crane walked to load the bases, and Jennah Speth unloaded them with a high fly ball in shallow left that landed in no-man's land for a double, pushing UIC's lead to 5-0. An error off the bat of Emily Wetzel brought Speth across the plate from second, extending the lead to 6-0.
  • A strikeout, a ground out and a fly ball retired the Raiders in order in the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Raiders had runners on in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, but UIC's defense was able to get out of every jam unharmed.
