Flames Fire Past Maroons, 4-1

UIC won depsite being limited to three hits Tuesday

CHICAGO – UIC collected only three hits Tuesday night, but the Flames walked nine times and were hit by three pitches to outscore the University of Chicago Maroons, 4-1, in the nonconference finale at Granderson Stadium.

Sean Dee was 0-for-1, officially, but the infielder drove in two runs for UIC (21-20), while his older brother Alex had two of the three hits for the Flames, both of which went for extra bases.

Braeden Toikka opened the game with 3.0 scoreless innings before making way for six relievers who took one inning each the rest of the way. The staff limited the Maroons to an unearned run on five hits with nine strikeouts and just two walks. Toikka was credited with his third victory on the staff day and Alex Padilla picked up his fifth save.

How It Happened
  • Patience at the plate helped UIC push across a run in the bottom of the second inning. After the first two hitters were retired, Chicago starter Nate Hendley walked three straight Flames. After a pitching change, Sean Dee was hit by a pitch to force in older brother Alex Dee and the first run of the ballgame.
  • The Flames added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Bottcher walked to open the inning and he went from first to third on Alex Dee's double down the left-field line. David Becker then put down a safety squeeze and Bottcher scored with ease to make it 2-0 in favor of UIC.
  • The Maroons got on the board for the first time in the top of the seventh inning. Brett Riegler poked a single into center field with two outs to cut UIC's lead to a single run. Jordan Krueger then fanned Connor Hickey to end the threat.
  • The home team added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ryan Lin-Peistrup singled to start the inning and, running with the pitch, he scored when Alex Dee launched a double that landed just inside the line in deep left field. After a sacrifice bunt from Becker, Dominic Smith was hit by a pitch. Then Sean Dee pushed a bunt up the right side to drive in his brother and pick up his second RBI of the game.
Notable
  • The Flames finished with a record of 8-10 in nonconference games this spring.
  • UIC won for only the third time when being outhit by the opposition. The team is now 3-15 when that occurs.
  • The Flames are 19-0 with a lead after six innings and 21-0 with a lead after seven. The squad is 17-6 when scoring first in a ballgame.
  • Sean Dee had his second multi-RBI performance of the season. He also drove in two runs against Milwaukee last Friday.
  • Alex Dee had multiple extra-base hits in a game for the first time this season.
  • Ryan Hampe extended his hitting streak to a team-high seven games with a base hit in the bottom of the fifth. That's also the longest streak of his young career.
  • Scott Ota was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh to extend his streak of reaching base safely to a team-high 26 games.
On Deck
  • UIC will open its final Horizon League series of the season at Granderson Stadium on Friday night against the Youngstown State Penguins.
  • The Penguins won two of the three games between the two teams at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio in April.
  • On Sunday the Flames will celebrate Senior Day.
