Flames Finish Undefeated Weekend at Idaho Volleyball Classic

UIC ends its first weekend with perfect 4-0 record

MOSCOW, Idaho – The UIC volleyball team (4-0) finished its first weekend of competition with a perfect 4-0 record at the Idaho Volleyball Classic after a 3-1 (25-27, 25-12, 25-18, 25-16) victory over Eastern Washington (1-2) and a 3-2 (25-20, 25-14, 22, 25, 30-32, 15-12) win against host Idaho (1-2).

UIC's win over Idaho marked the 200th-career win for head coach Justin Ingram, with his last 39 wins coming while at the helm for the Flames.

Game Highlights vs. Eastern Washington
Set One
  • Set one was locked in a 20-20 tie, but after a pair of kills from Michelle Glover the Flames had the advantage, 22-21.
  • A UIC attack error tied it at 22, but a Kiera James termination put the Flames back on top, 23-22.
  • The Eagles took three of the next four for a 25-24 advantage, but Paola Santiago stepped up and buried a feed to bring the set once again to a draw.
  • An EWU kill and a bad set from the Flames pushed the Eagles over the edge, 27-25.
Set Two
  • Early efficiency gave the Flames a 14-­­­­­5 advantage, and kills from Brookah Palmer, Alexandria Hicks and Glover kept the Eagles at bay, 20-10.
  • A pair of ball handling errors by the Flames put the deficit back in single digits, 21-12, but an EWU service error and a Palmer termination pushed UIC's lead to 11, 23-12.
  • Another Palmer kill and an Eagle attack error finished it, 25-12, in favor of the Flames. UIC finished the frame hitting .400 as a squad with 12 kills to EWU's six.
Set Three
  • UIC's offense continued to roll into the third set, notching 13 kills for a 20-15 lead.
  • Back-to-back kills from Paola Santiago and a block from Hicks and Glover extended UIC's lead, 23-15, but the Eagles got the next two off a service ace and a service error, 23-17.
  • Terminations at the hands of Sierra Bolen and Emily Kelly put the set to bed, 25-18.
Set Four
  • The Flames jumped out to a 17-11 lead in set four, keeping the Eagles to a mere three kills in that span.
  • UIC kept Eastern Washington from gaining any ground, allowing just six more Eagle points in route to another dominating 25-16 win.
Facts & Figures vs. Eastern Washington
  • Paola Santiago tallied 16 kills to lead the Flames.
  • Newcomer Brookah Palmer had her best match yet, recording 10 kills and hitting .769 with an error-free performance. The redshirt senior also added six digs on defense.
  • Michelle Glover brought in seven kills, while Alexandria Hicks recorded six. Glover also provided coverage at the net with a team-high six total blocks.
  • Lauren Musante registered her first double-double of the season, handing out 45 assists to go with 12 digs.
  • Velina Minkova led the defenders with 15 digs.
  • The Flames out-blocked the Eagles 6.5-4. UIC also had the advantage in kills, 57-35, as well as digs, 54-42.
Match Highlights vs. Idaho
Set One
  • Tied at 17, kills from Alexandria Hicks and Brookah Palmer gave the Flames a two-point advantage, 19-17.
  • Leading by one, 21-20, the Flames rattled off four more points to take the set 25-20. A pair of kills from Hicks and a termination from Emily Kelly paired with a Vandal bad set to give UIC the edge.
Set Two
  • Set two was tied at 12 when eight-straight points from the Flames made some distance, 20-12. The run featured kills from Paola Santiago, Michelle Glover and Hicks, as well as a Velina Minkova service ace.
  • The Vandals were only able to chip in two more points off a kill and a UIC bad set, before the Flames ran away with it, 25-14.
Set Three
  • Idaho jumped out to an early lead, 18-11.
  • The Flames came within four, 21-17 after terminations from Santiago and Hicks.
  • Santiago and Hicks continued the attack, allowing UIC to pull within two, 23-21, but a kill from the Vandals put them at set point, 24-21.
  • Glover buried a feed to put the Flames back within two, but another Vandal termination ended the set, 25-22.
Set Four
  • Idaho got another early lead in set four, 13-4.
  • The Flames got to work, eventually tying the match at 19.
  • The Vandals were one point away from the win, 24-22, when Brookah Palmer put down a pair of kills to bring the match back to a tie.
  • The two teams battled for the set, remaining in a tie at the 30-point mark, but an Idaho kill was followed by a block to push the Vandals over the edge, 32-30.
Set Five
  • Idaho grabbed five of the first six in the tiebreaker, but the Flames caught up, tying the set at nine.
  • UIC went up by two after another Palmer kill and a Vandal attack error, but Idaho took the next two off a kill and a block to once again bring the set to a draw, 11-11.
  • Palmer got the lead back for the Flames, killing three straight, 14-11.
  • The Vandals threatened with a kill, but Palmer stepped up again for UIC, giving the Flames the 15-11 win.
Facts & Figures vs. Idaho
  • Brookah Palmer stepped up her earlier performance, recording her first double-double as a Flame with a match-high 23 kills and 10 digs.
  • Paola Santiago registered her first double-double of the season with 18 kills and a team-high 22 digs.
  • Lauren Musante dished out a career-high 67 assists in the win. She paired it with 14 digs for her second double-double of the day.
  • Alexandria Hicks contributed 18 kills on offense, while also adding a team-high five total blocks.
  • Michelle Glover put up 10 kills for the offense, while Velina Minkova dug out 19 for the defense.
  • The Flames held the advantage in kills, 79-51 and had a sizeable lead in digs, 102-74. Idaho recorded more blocks, 17-11.
