In Memoriam: Don August

CHICAGO – Don August, who spent parts of four decades at the University of Illinois Chicago as a former football student-athlete and head volleyball coach, passed away on Friday, October 30. He was 68 years old.

August, a 1975 UIC graduate, played football from 1971-73. He later returned to his alma mater to lead the volleyball program from its first season of Division I competition in 1981 through 2003. In that time, he amassed 421 victories and lead the Flames to 20 wins or more eight times, including a UIC Division I record 30-win campaign in 1984. In 1988, August was honored as the North Star Conference Coach of the Year, after leading the Flames to a regular-season title.

August was inducted into the UIC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013. In addition to his own induction, August coached seven student-athlete inductees including: Kathy (Bay) Apostolovich, Claudine Borkovec, DeeDee Ericks, Carlyn Fisk, Debbie Obsala, Ilene (O'Connell) O'Ketter and Leslie (Slinkman) Allen.

August is survived by his beloved wife Gertrude "Gert", nee Riordan; loving father of Rachel August and Ashley (Kelly) Gaughan; dear brother of Joanne August, James (Michelle) August and Barbara (James) Holloman. Services will be held privately. All are encouraged to pay respects or share a fond memory through the online guestbook.
