Flames Fall at Oakland

UIC wraps up first #HLWBB series with 81-55 loss at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The UIC women's basketball team (1-4, 0-2 HL) wrapped up its first Horizon League series of the season on Sunday afternoon, taking an 81-55 loss to conference foe Oakland (2-2, 2-0 HL). The Flames were unable to bounce back from early shooting woes and come up with an answer for a surging Golden Grizzlies offense, which sank nine threes on the day.

First Half Highlights
  • After nearly two minutes without a score for either team, Oakland took an 8-1 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. Jada Nneji and Kristian Young put in buckets to put UIC within three, 10-7.
  • The Flames struggled to make their shots through the remaining minutes of the first frame, allowing the Golden Grizzlies to take a 19-8 lead at the end of the first.
  • A 10-0 run for UIC put them back within striking distance, 22-18, before a timely three by Oakland, 25-18.
  • Keona Schenck replied to Oakland's trey with a three of her own, but the Golden Grizzlies converted a three-point play on their next possession, 28-21.
  • The home team extended its lead at the half with back-to-back threes, 34-23.
Second Half Highlights
  • Schenck got things started with a jumper before Oakland ran off on a 14-3 run to grow its lead to 20, 48-28.
  • The Golden Grizzlies offense continued its push, outscoring the Flames 13-4 in the final four minutes of the third quarter to take a 66-39 lead into the final 10 minutes.
  • A 6-0 run for the Flames culminated in a three for Kimeira Burks, 68-45, but Oakland got five back with a three and a layup, 73-45.
  • The final buzzer sounded with the Golden Grizzlies on top, 81-55.
Facts & Figures
  • Keona Schenck led UIC's offense with a personal-best 17 points. The freshman also turned in four rebounds and one steal.
  • Tiana Jackson finished with a season-high 12 points behind 4-for-8 shooting. Jackson also made a season-high six rebounds and handed out a team-high four assists.
  • Jaida McCloud was in double-double territory with nine points and nine rebounds. Six of McCloud's nine boards came on the offensive side.
  • Kimeira Burks came off the bench for the Flames and collected eight points to go with five rebounds.
  • After shooting just 16.7 percent (3-of-18) in the first quarter, UIC finished the day shooting 31.7 percent (19-of-60) overall. The Golden Grizzlies shot 45.5 percent (30-of-66) on the day.
  • Oakland was also stronger from three, sinking 42.9 percent (9-of-21) of their long shots compared to 23.8 percent (5-of-21) for UIC. The Golden Grizzlies also held the advantage at the charity stripe, shooting 70.6 percent (12-of-17) compared to UIC's 60 percent (12-of-20).
  • The home team was stronger in the paint, 40-26, but the Flames had the advantage on the second chance, 22-19.
  • Oakland took 26 points off UIC's 20 turnovers, while the Flames profited three off 16 Golden Grizzlies miscues. Both teams scored 12 off the fast break, but Oakland's bench outscored UIC's 31-8.
