CHICAGO – UIC won Saturday's home opener against Detroit Mercy, but the Titans avenged their earlier loss with a 72-58 victory on Sunday at Credit Union 1 Arena.
The Flames (2-5, 1-3 Horizon League) were limited to only 10 points in the third quarter, while the Titans (1-7, 1-3 Horizon League) poured in 22 to take a 20-point lead into the final period. UIC outscored the visitors by six in the final period, but the deficit was ultimately too large to overcome.
Kristian Young tallied 11 points and dished out a career-high seven assists for UIC. The first-year Flame also hauled in seven rebounds and picked up three steals. Classmate
Keona Schenck also scored 11 points Sunday. Five Detroit Mercy players posted double figures in the scoring column Sunday, led by Bridgid Fox's 16 points off the bench.
First Half Highlights
- Kristian Young assisted Keona Schenck into a 5-4 lead for the Flames early, until a 6-0 run for Detroit Mercy allowed it double up on UIC, 10-5.
- A pair of layups and a triple from Daijah Smith put UIC back in the lead, 12-10, but the advantage would switch back in favor of the Titans by the end of the first quarter, 16-14.
- Detroit Mercy started off the second quarter with a pair of triples, 22-16.
- Still trailing by six, 27-21, the Flames' defense was able to force critical turnovers and ignite a 6-1 run for the offense and put UIC within one, 28-27.
- The Titans struck back, scored nine of the last 11 points of the first half to take a 37-29 lead at halftime.
Second Half Highlights
- The Titans contained UIC's offense and utilized an 8-0 run in the middle minutes of the quarter to extend their lead, 49-34.
- Detroit Mercy finished the third quarter on a 7-2 run and outscored UIC 22-10 in the quarter to push its advantage to 20, 59-39.
- The Flames tallied 19 points in the fourth quarter to the Titans' 13, but it was not enough, as the game went to the visitors, 72-58.

- Jaida McCloud and Daijah Smith both finished with nine points, followed by Tiana Jackson and Amira Coles with five apiece.
- Jada Nneji and Smith led for UIC on the boards with eight rebounds each. Young ended the day with seven, followed by McCloud's six-rebound effort.
- The Flames ended the day shooting 32.3 percent (20-for-62) on the day, while the Titans finished shooting 37.9 percent (25-for-66) overall. Detroit Mercy kept UIC to just 19 percent (4-for-21) beyond the arc, while it made 41.2 percent (7-for-17) of its shots from beyond the arc.
- The Titans led in rebounds, 50-39, as well as assists, 15-14.
- UIC committed 17 turnovers to Detroit Mercy's 15. Both teams took 23 points off each other's miscues.
- The Flames outscored the Titans in the paint, 30-26, and also held a hefty advantage off the fast break, 28-4. Detroit Mercy put in more on the second chance, 15-11.
