Flames Face Tough Competition in Day Two of FGCU Invitational

UIC falls to No. 24 Arkansas and host FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The UIC softball team (2-2) faced some tough competition in day two of the FGCU Invitational, falling 8-3 to No. 24 Arkansas before dropping an 8-0 decision in six innings to host Florida Gulf Coast in the nightcap.

Game Highlights vs. Arkansas
  • The Flames drew first blood as Kayla Wedl reached on a fielding error, Samantha Ferguson was hit by a pitch and Alyssa Griman reached on another error, 1-0.
  • Arkansas answered with four runs off four hits and a UIC miscue in their half of the first to take over the lead, 4-1.
  • The Razorbacks added another run in the bottom of the fourth off a sacrifice fly, 5-1.
  • Wedl led off the fifth inning with a triple, and she came in to score on a Razorback throwing error, 5-2.
  • four walks, two wild pitches and an error plagued the Flames in the bottom of the fifth, resulting in two more runs for Arkansas, 7-2.
  • Kayla Pociejewski, Alannah Cran and Kayla Wedl all singled in the top of the sixth to bring in a run for UIC, 7-3.

  • A pair of singles brought across another run for the Eagles in the bottom of the fourth, 2-0.
  • The Flames had a chance to score in the top of the fifth, as Maddie Spinks got on board via at hit-by-pitch and Alannah Cran followed with a single. Samantha Ferguson put the ball out to left, but Spinks was caught at home to end the inning.
  • The Eagles put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth with six runs. A leadoff walk was followed by six singles and a hit-by-pitch to hand the home team the 8-0 win.

  • UIC was outhit 10-4 in the nightcap. Freshman Samantha Ferguson took credit for three of UIC's four tabs, while Alannah Cran grabbed the remaining one.
  • Christina Toniolo got the start and the loss, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing three runs off four hits while striking out three.
  • Marley Hanlon gave up five runs and six hits in 0.1 innings.
