INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC women's basketball team (3-26, 2-16 HL) closed out the regular season on Friday night, taking an 87-51 loss to regular season champion IUPUI (21-8, 15-3 HL).
Jada Nneji (17 points, seven rebounds) and
Kimeira Burks (11 points, eight rebounds) both finished in double-double territory for the Flames, taking home their 15th and 10th double-digit scoring performances, respectively.
First Half Highlights
- IUPUI won the tip but Jada Nneji forced a turnover and returned the ball for two to give UIC the early lead. A trip to the charity stripe for Nneji would extend UIC's lead, 4-1.
- The next eight went to the Jags as they took over the lead, 9-4. Jealissa Presswood slowed down IUPUI with a layup, but it put it answered with two layups of its own, 13-6.
- Kimeira Burks got on the board with a three and a jumper from Nneji would put the Flames back within five, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter.
- Nneji and Ahsha Spencer got the Flames within four in the first minute and-a-half of the second quarter, 19-15. The Jags would get all four points back on their next run, 23-15.
- Nneji once again put UIC within striking distance with a three-point conversion, 27-22, but IUPUI sped off on a 14-0 streak, 41-22.
- A three for the Jags would end the first half, 46-26.
Second Half Highlights
- The Jags kept UIC without a score through the first four minutes of the second half, until Nneji was able to put away two quick buckets, 54-30.
- The two teams traded scores through the rest of the third quarter, leaving the Jags with a 62-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.
- Abreanna Lake and Burks gave the Flames a 7-2 run in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but the Jags scored the next nine without a response from the Flames, 73-42.
- Burks ended the rally with a three before another 9-0 run for IUPUI, 82-45.
- The final buzzer sounded with an 87-51 victory for the home team.
Facts & Figures
- Nneji entered the game needing one block to move into fourth place all-time at UIC, and she finished with four to bypass fourth place and move into third, bypassing recent Flames legend Ruvanna Campbell with 143 stops.
- In addition to her 11 points, Burks matched her career high with eight rebounds. She also set a new personal best with five assists.
- Tiana Jackson ended the night with six points and seven rebounds.
- The Flames tallied more assists than the Jags, 11-10, but the home team held the advantage in rebounds, 51-40.
- IUPUI shot 46.7 percent (35-of-75) overall, compared to 32.4 percent (22-of-68) for the Flames. UIC was stronger from three, making 27.3 percent (3-of-11) of their long shots compared to 16.7 percent (4-of-24) for the Jags.
- The Jags gained 18 points off 14 UIC turnovers. The Flames took six from six IUPUI miscues.
- IUPUI outscored UIC in the paint, 56-24. It was also stronger on the second chance, 19-9, as well as off the fast break, 12-4. The Jags' bench outscored the Flames' 32-11.
