Flames Downed by Dayton

UIC falls 12-8 in its EKU Invitational opener

RICHMOND, Ky. – The UIC softball team (6-10) started off the EKU Invitational on Friday with a 12-8 loss to Dayton (5-10). The Flyers utilized a seven-run fourth inning and stifled a late comeback attempt from UIC with three runs in its final at bat.

Game Highlights
  • Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, pulling off a double steal with runners on the corners.
  • Maddie Spinks and Kayla Pociejweski singled with one out in the top of the second, and Alannah Cran and Cassie Kaelber both followed with triples to drive in a trio of runs and allow the Flames to take over the lead, 3-1.
  • The Flyers put up crooked number in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on seven runs off six hits and two walks to take back the lead, 8-3.
  • Tara McElligott, Alyssa Griman and Maddie Spinks all singled to get things started for UIC in the top of the fifth. Kayla Pociejewski grounded out, but McElligott was able to score, 8-4. McKennah Ulrey walked to reload the bases, and Cran followed with a walk of her own to bring in another run, 8-5.
  • Dayton added four runs in the bottom of the sixth off a bases-loaded hit by pitch, a single and a steal, 12-5.
  • In their final at bat, Pociejewski led off for the Flames with a walk and Ulrey reached on an error, leaving runners at the corners for Cran, who batted a ball up the middle to plate Pociejewski, 12-6. Samantha Ferguson moved up both runners with a ground out, and Kayla Wedl singled out to left center to score two more runs, 12-8.

  • The Flames outhit the Flyers 12-9. Kayla Wedl, Alyssa Griman, Maddie Spinks, Alannah Cran and Cassie Kaelber all finished with multi-hit performances, while Tara McElligott and Kayla Pociejewski finished with once each.
  • Cran led the Flames with four RBI, followed by Wedl with two. Pociejweski and Kaelber each drove in one.
  • Pociejewski and Cran scored twice apiece to lead the Flames, while McElligott, Schyler Ek, Spinks, and McKennah Ulrey crossed the plate once.
  • Allie Trudeau got the start and took the loss (2-5), pitching 4.0 innings and allowing eight earned runs off seven hits. Jennah Spith pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up four earned runs off two hits.
