Flames Drop Florida Finale to Georgetown

Thomas Smart records a pair of hits to pace the Flames

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – UIC was unable to hold onto an early lead Sunday, as the Flames dropped a 12-4 decision to Georgetown in their final game at the Snowbird Classic.
 
UIC jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Hoyas scored 12 unanswered runs to take control of the contest. Thomas Smart led the attack, going 2-for-3 while also drawing a walk. Matt Bottcher, Garrett McCarthy and Cory Moore all registered RBIs for the Flames.
 
UIC returns to action on Wednesday, March 11, as the Flames welcome Augustana to campus. First pitch at Curtis Granderson Stadium is set for 5:05 p.m.
 
How it Happened
  • The Flames took the early lead with a three-run second inning. Smart led off the inning with a double and advanced to third when Trey Beckman reached on an error. McCarthy followed with an RBI double and a Moore RBI groundout made it 2-0. UIC picked up its third run of the inning when McCarthy raced home to score on a wild pitch.
  • Georgetown countered with 11 runs over the next three innings. The Hoyas scored four runs in the third on three hits and a pair of UIC errors before adding three more runs in the fourth on four more hits. The Hoyas capped off its hot streak with a four-run fifth inning.
  • The foes out of the Big East tacked on a solo run in the seventh on a wild pitch to take a 12-3 lead.
  • UIC countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the eighth. After the Flames walked the bases loaded, Bottcher was hit by a pitch to drive home Beckman.
 
News and Notes
  • Bottcher's hitting streak came to and at five games but he extended his on-base streak to a team-leading six games.
  • Nick Simonian made his season debut, throwing a scoreless inning and striking out a pair.
  • Thomas Norton is the only player to have started all 15 games at the same position, having started ever game at third base this season.
