Flames Trounce Zips; Fall Short to EKU

UIC run rules Akron 16-1, drops 7-5 decision to Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – The UIC softball team (9-11) split its final day of the EKU Invitational, trouncing Akron (6-18) 16-1 in five innings before coming up short in its finale against host Eastern Kentucky (19-2), 7-5. The Flames bats were on fire against the Zips, tallying team season highs in runs (16), hits (15) and RBIs (15). UIC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first against the Colonels but left 11 batters stranded over the next six innings to ultimately fall short.

The Flames finished out the weekend with a 3-2 record, led by an incredible performance from Kayla Pociejewski, batting .611 with 11 hits, eight runs and 12 RBI. The junior smacked four home runs and three doubles, finishing with a 1.444 slugging percentage on the weekend.

Game Highlights vs. Akron
  • A pair of two-run homers off the bats of Kayla Wedl and Kayla Pociejewski allowed the Flames to jump out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.
  • Alannah Cran led off the second with a double and moved to third on a grounder from Cassie Kaelber. Samantha Ferguson dropped one down in shallow right, allowing Cran to score. Wedl singled and Tara McElligott was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and a single from Maddie Spinks brought in two more runs, giving the Flames a 7-0 lead.
  • UIC doubled its lead with seven more runs in the top of the third. McKennah Ulrey, Cran and Kaelber loaded up the bases with singes, and a passed ball plated Ulrey, 8-0. Ferguson walked to reload the bases, and a fielder's choice from Wedl brought in Cran, 9-0. McElligott put one out to left center to clear the bases, bringing the tab up to 12-0. Alyssa Griman walked, moved on to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double from Pociejewski, 13-0. Ulrey stepped up to the plate again and drew a walk, and Cran followed with her second hit of the inning, scoring Pociejewski, 14-0.
  • The Flames added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, starting with a Wedl double and a McElligott walk. Spinks singled out to left to bring in Wedl, and another single followed off the bat of Pociejewski to plate McElligott, 16-0.
  • Akron got its first hits of the game in the bottom of the fourth, pushing one run across off two hits, 16-1.
  • Allie Trudeau fanned all three batters in the bottom of the fifth to end the game after five with a 16-1 win for the Flames.
Facts & Figures vs. Akron
  • The Flames' 16 runs were a team season high. Their 15 hits and three home runs were also season highs for the squad.
  • All but one Flame who played recorded a hit, as Kayla Wedl, Kayla Pociejewski and Alannah Cran all led for UIC with three hits. Maddie Spinks ended the game with a pair of hits, while Samantha Ferguson, Tara McElligott, McKennah Ulrey and Cassie Kaelber all finished with one.
  • Pociejewski led with a career-high four RBI, followed by Spinks, Wedl and McElligott with three apiece. Ferguson and Cran each drove in one.
  • Every Flame scored, led by four runs for Wedl. Ferguson, McElligott, Pociejewski and Cran each crossed the dish twice, while Griman, Spinks, Ulrey and Kaelber each crossed once.
  • Allie Trudeau gave a complete-game performance, improving to 3-5 on the season. The senior allowing a mere two hits and one earned run through 5.0 innings of work.
Game Highlights vs. Eastern Kentucky
  • Samantha Ferguson was hit by a pitch to start the game, and Kayla Wedl batted a single out to center, putting two on for Tara McElligott's three-run home run to left center, 3-0. Two batters later Kayla Pociejewski sent another one over the fence hugging the left-field line, 4-0.
  • Eastern Kentucky made its response in the bottom of the second, tallying four runs to tie the game at four.
  • The Colonels broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth thanks to two hits, a walk, an error and a wild pitch, 7-4.
  • Pociejewski's hot bat proved itself again in the top of the seventh, leading off with a solo shot,
Facts & Figures vs. Eastern Kentucky
  • UIC outhit EKU, 9-7, led by a perfect 4-for-4 performance from Kayla Pociejewski that included two home runs, a double and a single. Kayla Wedl also finished with a multi-hit performance, while Samantha Ferguson, Tara McElligott and Maddie Spinks each recorded one hit.
  • McElligott's three-run blast gave her a team-high three RBI on the day, while Pociejewski's solo blasts handed her UIC's two remaining RBI. Pociejewski's two runs were a team high, followed by Ferguson, Wedl and McElligott, who each scored once.
  • Christina Toniolo got the start and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) off seven hits to take the loss. Trudeau pitched an inning of relief with a clean sheet.
