UIC, Creighton to Renew Acquaintances

Flames Defeated Bluejays in 2007 NCAA Tournament

10/1/2021 3:11:00 PM

With the weekend off from Horizon League competition, UIC will travel to Omaha to take on Creighton at the site of the biggest win in program history.

"When we put together this season's schedule, Creighton was one of the matches that we knew would be a quality matchup between two teams that have a history of postseason success," Sean Phillips said.  "We were fortunate that our Horizon League bye week matched up with their Big East bye week.  It will take a workmanlike effort and continued improvement on both ends of the field for us to get a result in what I'm sure will be a great environment Saturday night."

Pau Mateo had a second half brace to lead UIC to a 3-1 win over Northern Kentucky on Wednesday.  It was UIC's first win this season after conceding the opening goal.  Mateo has three goals on the season and is in second place on the team, behind Younes Dayekh, who scored on a penalty kick against the Norse to give him four total goals.

The programs have met only three times before, all in Omaha.  UIC won the first two encounters, including in the 2007 NCAA Sweet 16 to send them to the program's first Elite Eight.  Creighton won the most recent matchup, in 2014.

The Flames, who have won four straight, will take on a Bluejay squad that has two wins on the season.  One of them, though, was arguably the biggest in all of college soccer.  Creighton blanked then-#1 Indiana, 3-0 in Bloomington.  It was the first of two matches against #1, as top-ranked Georgetown handed Creighton a 2-1 loss.

The teams have one opponent in common.  UIC drew with Saint Louis, while Creighton fell to the Billikens.

Creighton picked up their second win of the year with a 1-0 victory over Omaha in their most recent match.  Diego Gutierrez has a team high three goals.  Paul Kruse has been Creighton's lone keeper.  He has a 1.52 goals-against average and a .750 save percentage.

Streaming coverage will be on FloFC, starting at 7:00 pm.
