Flames Renew Rivalry With Wright State

UIC Returns Home For Important League Match

10/12/2021 12:32:00 PM

Wright State will visit Flames Field Wednesday night for a match between two teams in a familiar spot – neck-and-neck in the Horizon League standings.

"The last 10 years have seen the creation of a great rivalry between the two schools," Sean Phillips said.  "The games are always very close and entertaining, and oftentimes provide if not multiple goals, multiple chances."

The Raiders are in a tie for third place in the conference with 10 points.  UIC is right behind them with nine, with half of the league schedule to go.  The Flames have won three straight against the Raiders, but are 5-4-1 in the last 10 meetings.  Neither team has won four in a row in the history of the series, which dates to 1991.

UIC will look to get a result on the heels of two straight losses.  They tied Saturday's match against Robert Morris twice, but the Colonials responded both times to take a 3-2 win.  Nkusuwila Zulu and Younes Dayekh scored for the Flames.  Dayekh is among the conference leaders in shots and shots on goal, as well as goals and points.  Zulu's goal was his second of the season, making him the fourth Flame to score multiple goals.

Wright State blanked Purdue Fort Wayne, 4-0 on Saturday.  It was their highest scoring output of the season.  Zion Beaton leads the team with four goals.  Reece Allbaugh has four assists.  Sebastian Jimenez is the current Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week following his four-save shutout of Purdue Fort Wayne.  He has a 1.18 goals-against average and a .756 save percentage.

"Wright State is coached very well.  They have talent in every line of the field.  As they showed in their last match, they are capable of scoring a lot of goals," Phillips continued.  "We have to defend well.  In addition to that, the difference in the match will be who is better in transition, and who is more efficient with their opportunities."

The match will start at 7:00 Wednesday night, and can be seen on ESPN+.
