League-Leading Panthers Top Flames

UIC wrapped up its three-match roadtrip with a 3-1 setback to Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – Mikala Henderson fell one kill shy of matching a career high Tuesday as the UIC volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat to league-leading Milwaukee.

The sophomore was effective all night, registering 13 kills and converting at a .417 percentage to be UIC's most efficient attacker Tuesday. She was joined by Martina Delucchi and Paola Santiago with 10 or more kills in the contest, as Delucchi added 10 and Santiago led the Flames with 16.

Sohila Wafeek handled the majority of the setting duties, dishing out a team-high 36 assists while Jaclyn Oblena had a team-leading 15 digs. Santiago added 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.

Milwaukee jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the Flames responded with a 25-22 victory in the second set to even things up at 1-all. The Panthers, who entered the match undefeated in Horizon League play, pulled out victories in the third and fourth set to seal the match.

Following three consecutive matches on the road, the Flames return home to take on Youngstown State this Friday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m.

How It Happened
  • The opening set began with the teams keeping things even until a 4-0 Milwaukee run put the Panthers ahead, 8-4. A kill by Paola ended the scoring spree but UIC was unable to climb back into the match as Milwaukee closed out a 25-16 victory.
  • UIC bounced right back, taking the second set to even the match at 1-all. A Delucchi kill and a combo block from Kayanna Jones and Santiago gave UIC a 9-5 lead and forced a Milwaukee timeout. The Panthers climbed back to tie things at 18-all but a kill from Jackie Yau and a block from Delucchi and Wafeek closed out the 25-22 victory.
  • A pivotal 6-0 Milwaukee run put the hosts ahead 13-9 in the fourth set. The Flames battled back to get within one at 16-15 following a kill from Henderson and a Panter error, but UIC couldn't regain the lead as Milwaukee held on for a 25-21 decision.
  • An 8-0 run in the fourth set gave Milwaukee a commanding 13-4 lead. UIC looked to climb back, getting as close as five at 22-17 following a block from Yau and Santiago, but the Panthers closed out the set to claim the 3-1 victory.
