UIC will close out its season Wednesday night against IUPUI at Flames Field. The match will serve as the team's annual Kick Cancer contest, with several initiatives included to raise awareness for breast cancer. It will have a special start time of 6:00 p.m.
Fans in attendance will be given the chance to honor people in their lives who have battled breast cancer by writing their names on pink ribbons. Those ribbons, along with others honoring those close to the team, coaches, and staff, will be displayed along the sideline during the match.
Patient navigators from the UI Cancer Center will join the Flames as honorary captains. Patient navigators guide patients as they move through the continuum of care, including cancer screening, diagnostic testing, treatment, and survivorship. Navigators lend their expertise and help patients overcome barriers every step of the way.
UIC's alpha Kappa Delta Phi sorority will be on hand to raise awareness and collect donations for breast cancer research. Sisters have raised over $1.1 million nationwide to help those affected by breast cancer over the past 20 years.
The Flames will look to end the season on a bright note against the Jaguars. UIC is out of the running for the Horizon League tournament, which will include the top six teams. However, IUPUI can make the tourney with a win and some help, so UIC will try to play the role of spoiler.
Sara Sanabria got her first collegiate start in the Flames' last outing at Wright State. She played the first half in goal, before giving way to
Lauren Keiser, who made her Flames debut.
Megan Bowman scored UIC's goal, which pulled her into a tie with
Kaitlyn Montague for the team lead.
IUPUI has earned a result in each of their last four matches. They defeated Youngstown State most recently, to go along with draws with Green Bay and Robert Morris, and a win over Detroit Mercy. Elizabeth Bueckers leads the Jaguars with six goals on the season.
