Flames Drop Lid Lifter at Northwestern

Jaida McCloud paced UIC with 14 points and seven rebounds

EVANSTON – UIC opened the 2021-22 campaign Wednesday evening by taking a short trip north from campus to nearby Evanston to take on the Northwestern at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Big Ten's Wildcats proved to be too much for the Flames to handle as the home team secured an 72-49 victory.

Leading by only a single point, 9-8, with just over a minute remaining in the opener's premier period, NU's Veronica Burton ignited a 14-0 run that extended into the second period. UIC's Tiana Jackson canned a 3-pointer on a second-chance opportunity to stem the tide with 5:38 remaining in the half. The Wildcats would take a 16-point lead into the break when Burton sank a desperation 3-pointer from half court as the buzzer sounded.

The Flames trailed by 19 with just over three minutes gone by in the second half before a quick burst of eight unanswered points sliced the deficit to 11. Keona Schenck scored six of the run's eight points with an old fashioned 3-point play followed by a traditional version on a fastbreak off a feed from Justice Gee. That basket made it 37-26 with six minutes to go in the third period, however UIC was unable to close the gap further throughout the remainder of the contest.

The Flames will turn their attention to a familiar foe next week as they open Horizon League play on the road. UIC will travel to take on Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
