Red-Hot Flames Top Penguins

UIC won its eight match in its last nine contests with a 3-1 win over Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The UIC volleyball team continued its winning ways Thursday evening with a 3-1 road win over Youngstown State. With the victory, UIC has now won three consecutive matches, and eight of its last nine contests, heading into Sunday's regular season finale.
 
Paola Santiago had a team-high 19 kills to go along with 15 digs for her fifth consecutive double-double. Martina Delucchi added 15 kills and six digs while Becca Oldendorf returned to form with 14 kills and six assisted blocks Thursday evening.
 
In a tightly contested first set, UIC overcame 10 tied scores and four lead changed to take the opening set by a 25-22 margin. The Penguins evened things up with a 25-18 victory in the second set before the Flames ran away with the final two sets, collecting 25-13 and 25-17 victories to improve to 16-11 on the year and 12-3 in Horizon League play.
 
As a team, the Flames hit at a .421 attack percentage, the team's second-highest mark of the season. Jaclyn Oblena led the way with a team-high 12 digs of the defensive end while sharing the team lead with Sohila Wafeek with two aces in the match.
 
UIC closes out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 12 at Robert Morris. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. (CT).

  • Freshman Salma Abdelhady had a career-high eight kills on an effective .389 hitting percentage in the match.
  • UIC owned a 7.5-3.0 advantage in blocks and a slim 8-7 mark in aces.
  • Wafeek dished out a match-high 48 assists in the match.
  • Oldendorf tied her career high with 14 kills in her first extended run since Sept. 26 when she also recorded 14 kills in a win over Purdue Fort Wayne.
