UIC's final regular season game will be an important one, as the team holds its postseason fate in its own hands. A win or a draw at Green Bay Wednesday will guarantee the Flames no lower than a fourth place finish in the Horizon League standings, and with it the right to host a quarterfinal match in the conference tournament.
The Flames picked up some momentum on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Detroit Mercy. Not only did that result snap a three-game losing streak, but it also snapped a tie with the Titans in the standings and secured the tiebreaker, should it come into play, for UIC.
Bukola Abdulwahab curled in a fantastic shot to stake UIC to a late-first half lead, and
Josh Torres flicked a back-heel shot into the net for a measure of insurance.
Green Bay enters the finale at 2-9-4, and winless at home, but their last two matches have seen them earn results against Purdue Fort Wayne and Robert Morris – two squads that beat the Flames. Ethan Hoard is the team's leading scorer with three goals. Tobias Jahn and Jamison Yoder have split the starts in goal. Jahn has put up superior stats, with a .714 save percentage and a 1.34 goals-against average.
"Green Bay is a team whose quality is better than their record indicates. They are coming off a positive result with a win over Robert Morris and a tie with Purdue Fort Wayne. They look to be in good form,"
Sean Phillips said. "We have to build on our performance against Detroit Mercy. We have to be hungry and humble in our approach to put ourselves in a position to earn three points on the road at Green Bay."
Torres' goal against Detroit Mercy was his second of the season, giving the Flames five multiple-goal scorers. Abdulwahab moved into a tie for second on the squad with eight points.
Andres Vasquez made five saves against the Titans and recorded his conference-best sixth shutout, earning him Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this year.
The Phoenix hold a slim 24-22-1 edge in the all-time series, but the Flames have gone 22-8-1 against them since 1997. Green Bay has wins in two of the last three meetings. Both have come at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Wednesday's match will start concurrently with all other Horizon League action, at 1 p.m. Central. There will not be a video stream.
