The Flames Host The Billikens On Saturday Afternoon

12/17/2021 1:30:00 PM

UIC women's basketball (2-6, 1-3 Horizon) hosts the Saint Louis Billikens (3-7) at Credit Union 1 Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Flames are coming off a 76-50 loss to the Sycamores of Indiana State; Saint Louis is coming off an 80-69 loss to Horizon League competitor, Northern Kentucky.

The Flames' last game against Indiana State was a trying match up for UIC. One of the bright spots, however, was freshman Ky Dempsey-Toney. The forward out of New Jersey scored a career-high 14 points, hauled in three rebounds, recorded one block, and a steal on the game. Dempsey-Toney also went a perfect 6-6 from the field and 2-3 from the free-throw line.

UIC has been one of the most tenacious teams in forcing turnovers, ranking No. 53 nationally and No. 1 in the Horizon League. The Flames force 20.75 turnovers per game, while the Billikens, on average, turn the ball over 15.6 a game. The Flames' defense needs to apply pressure to the ball handler to force Saint Louis into some ill-advised passes and use their quickness to cut off the passing lanes for easy transition scores.

The Billikens have one of the better posts in the nation in Brooke Flowers. The 6'5" senior is one of the nation's top shot-blockers, ranking No. 12 nationally in total blocks and No. 6 in rebounds per game. Flowers could be a problem if the Flames can't draw fouls or tire her out early on.

Since 2011, UIC and Saint Louis have faced off only twice. In their first competition, the Flames hosted the Billikens on Nov. 18, 2011, when the UIC defeated Saint Louis, 68-60. In their last match, the Billikens hosted the Flames on Dec. 3, 2012. The Flames fell 58-49 in that game.

Tip-off for Saturday's game will be at 1 p.m. CST on Saturday, Dec. 18.
