Flames Fall to Saint Francis and Tennessee Tech in Weekend Finale

UIC finishes with 2-3 showing at Winthrop Garnet/Gold Classic

ROCK HILL, SC – The UIC softball team (2-3) wrapped up its first weekend of competition on Sunday, taking a 4-3 loss to Saint Francis (7-1) in eight innings before dropping a 9-1 (6) decision in its final game of the weekend against Tennessee Tech.

Game Highlights vs. Saint Francis
  • UIC scored first in its first at bat, as Kayla Wedl reached second on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a single from Tara McElligott, 1-0.
  • Saint Francis led off the third inning with a solo home run, tying the game at one. The inning continued with a walk, a ground out and a single, which allowed the Red Flash to take over the lead, 2-1.
  • Wedl put her third bomb of the weekend over the fence in the bottom of the third, allowing the Flames to tie the game at two runs apiece.
  • Saint Francis led off the top of the fourth with another solo home run to take back the lead, 3-2.
  • The Flames tied it up again in the bottom of the sixth, as Wedl and Dee Dee Caskey batted back-to-back doubles, 3-3.
  • Neither team had won it after seven, so with the tiebreaker rule in place, the Red Flash started the eighth with a runner on second. A leadoff single to right would score the runner, giving Saint Francis the 4-3 lead.
  • Maica Ingles started on second for UIC in its half of the eighth and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Samantha Ferguson, but the next two Flames struck out to leave her stranded and give the Red Flash the extra-innings win.
