YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The UIC volleyball team (6-0, 6-0 HL) extended its season-opening win streak to six on Tuesday with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-15) sweep over Youngstown State (2-4, 2-4 HL). The Flames have won their last 10-straight sets to remain perfect on season so far.
UIC's offense was again the star of the show, hitting .380 as a squad to record the 10th-highest single game attack percentage in the program's history.
First Set Highlights
- The Flames took the first five points for an early edge, 5-0. The Penguins pulled within one at the 11-10 mark, but the Flames took four of the next five for some breathing room, 15-11.
- The Penguins put down a kill, 15-12, before terminations from Martina Delucchi and Alexandria Hicks led to three more points for UIC, 18-12.
- A pair of YSU kills brought them within three, 22-19. Becca Oldendorf buried a pair of feeds to get the Flames to set point, 24-20, before a Penguin service error handed the set to UIC, 25-21.
Second Set Highlights
- Set two started with another 5-0 run for the Flames at the start, 5-0. The Penguins picked up their first two points, 5-2, but UIC's offense cranked up the heat, collecting terminations from Paola Santiago, Oldendorf, Hicks and Morgan Kull, 13-3.
- The offensive onslaught continued, eventually cruising to a 24-9 lead after more kills from Santiago, Oldendorf, Delucchi, Hicks and Zahria Woodard.
- Youngstown State was able to chip in two more points before Francesca Wagoner delivered the set-ending blow, 25-11.
- The Flames hit an incredible .600 in the second set, committing a mere one error as a squad across the frame.
Third Set Highlights
- The Flames once again showed early dominance, taking six of the first seven, 6-1.
- Youngstown State was able to pull within four, 12-8, but UIC got back to business, collecting kills from Delucchi, Santiago, Oldendorf, Hicks and Mikala Henderson to eventually double up on the Penguins, 20-10.
- Henderson added two more for the Flames, 22-11, and Wagoner and Woodard got UIC to match point, 24-14. A misplaced Penguin attack would end the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-0.
Facts & Figures
- Paola Santiago was once again the leader in kills, terminating 14 while hitting .393 (14k-3e-28a) with three digs and a pair of blocks.
- Becca Oldendorf turned in her third double-digit kill effort with 11 terminations. She ended the night hitting a team-high .588 (11k-1e-17a), committing just one error in the match.
- Alexandria Hicks hit a season-high .533 (9k-1e-15a).
- Martina Delucchi added eight kills for the offense and also dug out 13.
- Libero Jaclyn Oblena led the defense with 15 digs.
- Morgan Kull contributed to both the offense and the defense, picking up her third double-double of the season with 41 assists and 11 digs.
- UIC had a hefty advantage in kills, 52-30. It also led the way in digs, 52-37, and assists, 48-29. Both teams recorded three blocks.
