Flames Take Down Oakland 3-1 in Series Opener

Paola Santiago nearly joins the 20-20 club with 19 kills and 19 digs

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (8-1, 8-1 HL) picked up its fifth-straight win at home on Monday evening, taking care of Horizon League foe Oakland (5-4, 5-4 HL) in four sets (25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 25-22) in the series opener between the two teams. Paola Santiago turned in her third double-double of the season and nearly joined the 20-20 club, matching her career-high 19 kills to go with a team-high 19 digs.

Set One Highlights
  • UIC jumped ahead 13-7 in set one and never looked back. The Golden Grizzlies were able to pull within four, 16-12, before a 3-0 run for the Flames created more distance, 19-12.
  • A Sohila Wafeek service ace and an Oakland attack error helped UIC get to set point, 24-17.
  • The Golden Grizzlies tried to make a late campaign with back-to-back aces, but a Becca Oldendorf and Alexandria Hicks block would end it, 25-19.
Set Two Highlights
  • The Flames once again built an early lead, 13-8. After an Oakland timeout, the Golden Grizzlies took five of the next seven to reduce the lead to two, 15-13.
  • Hicks put down a kill, 16-13, but an Oakland kill and a UIC error followed, putting the visitors one away, 16-15.
  • After a Flames timeout, UIC pushed back ahead, taking five of the next six, 21-16.
  • Oakland turned the tables, scoring seven of the next eight to tie the set at 22.
  • The two teams fought for the two-point advantage, with Oakland eventually putting away back-to-back points on a kill and a UIC error to complete the comeback, 27-25.
Set Three Highlights
  • UIC closed a 17-13 gap and took over the lead in set three after a 6-0 run, 19-17. Martina Delucchi and Zahria Woodard put up a block in the run, while the Flames also collected kills from Woodard and Santiago.
  • The two teams traded points through the next nine scores, leaving UIC with a 23-22 advantage.
  • Terminations from Mikala Henderson and Zahria Woodard finished out the set with a win for the Flames, 25-22.
Set Four Highlights
  • Set four was a close battle at the start, until the Flames were able to break a 15-15 tie with a Hicks kill, a pair of Morgan Kull aces and an Oakland attack error, 19-15.
  • The Golden Grizzlies ended UIC's run with a kill, which Santiago immediately responded to, 20-16.
  • Three Oakland kills and a Flames miscue tied the set at 20.
  • Still tied at 22, UIC polished off the Golden Grizzlies with kills from Hicks and Santiago, as well as a Santiago – Woodard block, 25-22.
Facts & Figures
  • Martina Delucchi turned in a career-high 15 kills and was near a double-double with nine digs.
  • Alexandria Hicks was also in double figures for the Flames with 10 kills.
  • Becca Oldendorf finished with eight kills, while Zahria Woodard finished with six. Woodard also put down a team-high three blocks.
  • Jaclyn Oblena recorded 16 in the libero position.
  • Sohila Wafeek and Morgan Kull shared the setter role, with Kull handing out 25 assists while Wafeek dished out 31.
  • The Flames hit .222 (64k-25e-176a) as a squad, compared to .205 (55k-22e-161a) for the Golden Grizzlies.
  • UIC tallied more assists, 62-52, but Oakland held the advantage in digs, 77-73. Both teams made an even six blocks.
