YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The UIC softball team (4-8, 1-1 HL) squared off with Horizon League foe Youngstown State (7-3, 1-1 HL) for its conference opener on Friday, splitting a doubleheader with the Penguins. Miranda Gomez allowed the Flames to strike back with a 4-0 shutout win in game two.
Game One Highlights
- Youngstown State strung together a trio of hits with two outs in their first at bat for an early lead, 2-0.
- A single, a walk and another single added a run for the Penguins in the bottom of the third, 3-0.
- The Flames cut the lead down to one with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Larisa Villa came in to pinch hit, batting a single to second. Maddie Spinks walked, and Maica Ingles followed with a ground out to move both runners into scoring position for Kayla Wedl, who put a single out to left to score both runners, 3-2.
- The Penguins re-established their lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, 5-2.
- UIC's batters were retired in order in the top of the seventh, handing Youngstown State the 5-2 win.

Game Two Highlights
- Youngstown State threatened in its first at bat, putting down a pair of one-out singles, but a strikeout and a flyout would get the Flames out of the inning unharmed.
- After four scoreless innings, Kayla Wedl broke open the scoring in the top of the fifth with the second grand slam of her career, instantly handing the Flames a 4-0 advantage.
- The Penguins threatened again in their final at bat, putting two batters on with two outs via a hit-by-pitch and a single. Maddie Spinks came in to make the catch out in center to end the threat and hand the Flames the shutout victory.
Game Two Facts & Figures
- The two teams tallied an even six hits apiece. Kayla Wedl took credit for half of UIC's tabs, finishing 3-for-4 on the day with a grand slam and a pair of singles. Wedl's slam also gave her all four of the game's RBIs.
- Alannah Cran, Cassie Kaelber and Dee Dee Caskey made up UIC's remaining three hits.
- Wedl, Caskey, Maddie Spinks and Isabelle Garcia all crossed the plate for the Flames, courtesy of the Wedl slam.
- Miranda Gomez pitched the duration, picking up her second win of the season and the first shutout of her career. Gomez spread out six hits across seven innings of work while striking out a personal-best four.
