A back-and-forth match came down to the third set of the final singles match, where
Gustavo Schwebel gave UIC its first win of the season. His win at #3 was the first of his career, and it secured a 4-3 win for the Flames over Chicago State Sunday afternoon.
"We had match point in doubles yesterday but couldn't close it out,"
Hans Neufeld noted. "The guys came out with a lot of energy and won the doubles point today, and carried that momentum into singles where Luiz and Gustavo came through with big wins."
The match started off with
Anthony Nguyen and Schwebel, playing at #1 doubles for the first time, helping the Flames win the doubles point. Chicago State won two straight points in singles, but the Flames answered to take a 3-2 lead. After the Cougars tied things up on the #6 court, Schwebel completed his rally from a set down and the Flames were victorious.
The win gives UIC momentum going into Horizon League play, which begins next weekend.
