UIC battled league favorite Cleveland State in the Horizon League opener Saturday.  The Flames found bright spots on a couple of singles courts but ultimately fell, 5-2.  Though the team scored its most points against the two-time defending conference champions since 2016, Hans Neufeld thought there were some missed opportunities.  "We had our chances," he said, adding, "we have to build on it for tomorrow's match."

The teams will play again Sunday morning.

Doubles Results

• Anthony Nguyen and Gustavo Schwebel remained on the #1 court, where they lost 6-3.
• Artem Iermolov and Casey Schrader fell by the same score at #3.
• Pelle Strandberg and Luiz Dos Santos were locked in a 4-4 battle on the #3 court when play was halted.

Singles Results

• Nguyen's match at #2 was the first to finish, in a 6-2, 6-2 win for Cleveland State.
• Strandberg was unable to string together many games in his 6-2, 6-1 setback at #1.
• Schwebel got the Flames on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #3.  It was his second straight singles win.
• Schrader battled in the first set before falling in the second, 7-5, 6-3, at #6.
• Dos Santos pushed his #4 match to a tiebreaker, but was unable to sustain the momentum from his second-set win, 6-2, 4-6, 10-1.
• Iermolov picked up his first singles win of the year.  He rebounded from a second-set loss to win the tiebreaker, 7-6, 3-6, 10-5
