CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (9-9 6-2 HL) picked up another pair of wins over Horizon League foe Purdue Fort Wayne (3-9, 2-6 HL) on Sunday, taking a 10-4 win in game one and finishing with an 8-3 victory in game two to complete the series sweep. Purdue Fort Wayne jumped out to an early lead after its first at bat in both games, but the Flames fought back both times to soundly defeat the Mastodons in both instances.
Game One Highlights
- A leadoff homer and a later three-run home run for the Mastodons gave them an early 4-0 advantage.
- The Flames got to work in the bottom of the second, starting off with a one-out solo shot to left center for Alannah Cran, 4-1. Dee Dee Caskey put down a two-out bunt, and Maica Ingles, Kayla Wedl and Samantha Ferguson all followed with singles, tying the game at four. Emma Crowley capped off the inning with her first career home run, a two-run shot over the left-field fence, putting the Flames ahead 6-4.
- The Flames added on a run in the bottom of the fourth after a Wedl single, a Ferguson double and a sacrifice fly from Crowley, 7-4.
- UIC put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Crowley put a single up the middle and was replaced on the bags with McKennah Ulrey. McElligott put down a bunt, and the resulting throw to third in attempt to get our Ulrey allowed McElligott to take second, putting two runners in scoring position for the Cassie Kaelber double, which scored both runners, 9-4. Cran followed with a double of her own, plating Kaelber and further growing UIC's lead, 10-4.
- The Mastodons got one base runner in the bottom of the seventh off a hit-by-pitch, but they would leave her stranded as the Flames came away with the 10-4 win.
Game One Highlights
- Crowley led the Flames with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while also bringing in a team-high three RBI on the day. Wedl, Ferguson, Cran and Maddie Spinks all finished with multi-hit performances, while Tara McElligott, Dee Dee Caskey, Kaelber and Ingles all finished with one hit for the Flames.
- Wedl, Kaelber and Cran all joined Crowley with multi-RBI showings, driving in a pair of runs apiece. Ferguson picked up the remaining RBI for the Flames.
- Wedl crossed the dish a team-high twice, meanwhile all but one starter scored a run for the Flames as Ferguson, Crowley, Ulrey, McElligott, Kaelber, Cran, Caskey, and Ingles all recorded a run.
- Miranda Gomez pitched her second complete game of the weekend to improve to 4-3 on the season, allowing four runs (one earned) off four hits in seven innings of work.
Game Two Highlights
- Two singles, a walk and a double allowed Purdue Fort Wayne to once again take an early lead, 3-0.
- The Flames' bats were relatively quiet until the bottom of the fifth, when Larisa Villa entered the game to pinch hit and put down a single at the shortstop. Another pinch hitter, Isabelle Garcia, followed with a fielder's choice and Wedl batted into a fielder's choice of her own, which led to a Purdue Fort Wayne error and put runners on the corners for the Flames. Wedl stole second to move herself into scoring position for the Ferguson single, which scored a pair of runs and put UIC within one, 3-2.
- UIC put up a crooked number in the bottom of the sixth to comeback and take the win. Kaelber singled, Cran bunted and Spinks singled to load the bases, and a triple off the bat of Ingles cleared the bags and put the Flames in the lead, 5-3. Caskey singled up the middle to score Ingles, and Wedl followed with a two-base hit to put runners on the corners. Ferguson flied out to left, allowing Caskey to tag up and score, 7-3. A Mastodon error scored Wedl and once more pushed UIC's lead, 8-3.
- The Mastodons batted a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but the next two batters were retired in order to end it with an 8-3 win for the Flames.
