GREEN BAY, WIS. – The UIC softball team (10-12, 7-5 HL) split its final day in Green Bay, run-ruling the Phoenix (14-8, 9-5 HL) in game one before falling in game two. The Flames posted a season-high 13 runs and kept Green Bay from scoring for a 13-0 win in game one but were unable to keep Green Bay's bats silent through game two, as the home team took the finale, 9-5.
Game One Highlights
- UIC scored first, bringing in one run in the top of the second off a Tara McElligott double and a Cassie Kaelber single, 1-0.
- The Flames extended their lead in a hefty fashion on the top of the third, tacking on seven runs for an 8-0 lead. Maddie Spinks started things off with an infield single, and she quickly moved to third after an error and a wild pitch. Kayla Wedl tripled to bring her in, and Samantha Ferguson followed with a single to plate Wedl, 3-0. Emma Crowley singled, and Alannah Cran was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Flames brought another run across off a wild pitch, leaving two runners in scoring position for Maica Ingles, who forced an error on the second baseman, allowing both runners to score, 6-0. Kaelber singled to center and Spinks followed with her second at bat of the inning, putting a triple out to deep left to allow another pair of runs to score, 8-0.
- UIC extended its lead again with another five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wedl got things started with her sixth home run of the season, a solo shot over the fence in left, 9-0. Ferguson walked, Crowley singled, and a sacrifice bunt from Cran moved both Ferguson and Crowley over. McElligott walked to load the bases, and a triple from Ingles unloaded them, 12-0. Kaelber grounded out, but it allowed Ingles to score, pushing UIC's lead all the way to 13.
- Green Bay put on a pair of base runners in the bottom of the fifth, but they would both be left stranded as the Flames ended it early.
Game One Facts & Figures
- The Flames outhit the Phoenix 11-4, which included a team season-high three triples. Wedl, Crowley, Kaelber and Spinks each finished with a multi-hit performance, while Ferguson, McElligott and Ingles each finished with one hit apiece.
- Ingles drove in the most runs with her triple in the bottom of the fourth. Wedl, Kaelber and Spinks each followed with two RBI each. Ferguson picked up UIC's remaining RBI.
- Wedl, Crowley, McElligott and Ingles each scored twice for the Flames, while Ferguson, McKennah Ulrey, Alannah Cran, Kaelber and Spinks each scored once.
- Christina Toniolo pitched the duration, earning her first shutout victory of the season. Toniolo spread out four hits across 5.0 innings, striking out four to improve to 6-4 on the year.
Game Two Highlights
- The Flames scored first again in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a single from Wedl and a double from Ferguson.
- Green Bay mirrored UIC in its half of the first, scoring one run off a double and a single to tie the game at one.
- The Flames took back the lead in the top of the second. Kaelber singled to center, stole second and scored on a single up the middle from Spinks, 2-1. Wedl singled to the shortstop, stole second and was caught trying to take third, but Spinks was able to score from third in the meantime, 3-1.
- Green Bay utilized a pair of home runs in the bottom of the second to take over the lead, 6-3.
- The Phoenix added on a run in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single to extend their lead, 7-3.
- Two hits and a trio of walks added a pair of runs to Green Bay's lead in the bottom of the fifth, 9-3.
- The Flames got a pair of runs off in their final at bat off a two-out RBI double from McElligott, but it wasn't enough, as the Phoenix ended the threat on the next batter to hand UIC the 9-5 loss.
Game Two Facts & Figures
- The Flames outhit the Phoenix 11-10. Ferguson led the way with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, followed by Wedl, who finished the game 2-for-4. Jordyn Cebedo, McElligott, Ingles, Kaelber and Spinks each finished with one hit.
- McElligott drove in two of UIC's five runs, while Ferguson and Spinks drove in one each.
- Wedl, Crowley, Cran, Kaelber and Spinks all scored for UIC.
- Miranda Gomez got the start and took the loss, allowing six earned runs off six hits in 1.2 innings of work. Toniolo pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one earned run off one hit. Alyssa McIntosh dealt the final 2.0 innings, allowing two earned runs off three hits. Â
