Bobby Nicholson and
Fred Gosbeth combined on a two-hit shutout as UIC swept Milwaukee with a 7-0 win Sunday afternoon.
The Flames scored a run in the second inning, and Nicholson made it stand up as he did not allow a hit until two were out in the fifth. He walked three through the first four innings, but double plays by the Flames' defense erased threats in the third and fourth. Then Nicholson found his groove, striking out three and allowing just a pair of two-out hits over his last four innings of work.
Cory Moore scored the game's first run. He singled, and scored after two more base hits and an RBI groundout. The Flames threatened in the third and the fourth, putting a pair of runners on base in each frame, but were unable to score. They broke through again in the sixth. A hit batter and an error put runners on second and third, and chased starter Matt McCarty. James Severson's first pitch was wild, plating
Thomas Norton. Later in the at-bat,
Thomas Smart drove in
Garrett McCarthy with a triple to left-center. Smart tried to make it home himself, but was thrown out after appearing to hesitate rounding third base.
The Flames loaded the bases with none out in the seventh, prompting Milwaukee to bring in closer AJ Blubaugh.Â
Cole Conn greeted him with a two-run double, and three batters later, McCarthy knocked in Conn with a fielder's choice.
Smart drove in his third run of the game with a sac fly in the eighth after
Ryan Nagelbach led off with a triple. Smart was one of four Flames with two hits as part of the team's 11-hit attack.
Nicholson, making just his second start of the season, got the win for the second straight Sunday. He threw 63 of 96 pitches for strikes and struck out five altogether. Gosbeth breezed through a 1-2-3 ninth to lock up the team's second straight sweep of a Horizon League foe and their 10
th win in their last 11 games. They outscored Milwaukee 30-5 over the four-game set.
The Flames will return home for their final regular season home series next weekend. Youngstown State will visit for four games that could prove to be crucial for Horizon League tournament seeding. The series will begin Friday at 4:05.
