CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (14-12, 11-5 HL) completed its second Horizon League series sweep of the season on Saturday, winning both games of a doubleheader against Northern Kentucky (7-19, 6-12 HL) to improve to 11-5 in Horizon League play and remain a perfect 8-0 at home. The Flames came back to defeat the Norse 7-6 in game one, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the one-run victory. In game two, UIC broke a 2-2 tie with a six-run fifth inning to soundly defeat Northern Kentucky, 8-3.
Game One Highlights
- The Norse scored in their first at bat, taking a 1-0 lead after a trio of singles.
- Samantha Ferguson batted her first home run of the year in the Flames' half of the first, tying the game at one run apiece.
- The Flames took the lead in their next at bat, as Tara McElligott doubled and scored after a groundout and a fielder's choice, 2-1.
- Northern Kentucky put up a two-out grand slam in the top of the third to take back the lead, 5-2.
- Two singles and an error allowed the Norse to add a run in the top of the fourth, 6-2.
- Kayla Wedl doubled to start the bottom of the fifth, and Ferguson batted her in with a single to right center, 6-3. Emma Crowley followed with her second home run of the season, putting the Flames within one, 6-5.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Dee Dee Caskey reached on a bunt, stole second, and came in to score on an RBI single from Wedl, tying the game at six. The inning continued for the Flames as Wedl stole second, Ferguson walked and Crowley forced a Norse error, which allowed Wedl to score and gave the Flames a one-run advantage, 7-6.
- Northern Kentucky put on one base runner with two outs in the top of the seventh off a hit-by-pitch, but the next batter popped up to Maica Ingles at second to end the game with the UIC on top.
Game One Facts & Figures
- UIC had the edge in hits, 10-9. Samantha Ferguson finished the day going 3-for-3 at the plate, while Kayla Wedl also finished with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4. Emma Crowley, Tara McElligott, Maica Ingles, Cassie Kaelber and Dee Dee Caskey made up UIC's remaining tabs.
- Ferguson and Crowley led the team in RBIs, driving in a pair each. Wedl and Maddie Spinks drove in UIC's other two runs.
- Wedl and Ferguson each crossed the plate twice, while Crowley, McElligott and Caskey each scored once.
- Alyssa McIntosh got the start and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) off six hits. Marley Hanlon pitched the remaining 4.1 innings to earn the win, allowing one unearned run off three hits.
Game Two Highlights
- It was UIC who took the 1-0 lead in the first in game two, as Kayla Wedl was hit by a pitch to lead things off and Samantha Ferguson singled to center. Emma Crowley grounded out, but it allowed Wedl to score.
- NKU tied things up in the top of the second with a solo home run, 1-1.
- A trio of singles allowed the Norse to take a one-run lead in the top of the third, 2-1.
- Alannah Cran and Maica Ingles singled to start off UIC's half of the fourth, and a fielder's choice from the pinch-hitting Isabelle Garcia loaded the bases. Larisa Villa stepped in to pinch hit, and she drew a walk, platting Cran and tying the game at two.
- The Flames broke the 2-2 tie with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Crowley singled and Tara McElligott brought her in with her third homer of the season, 4-2. Ingles kept things going with a single and Maddie Spinks reached on a walk, and they both advanced into scoring position on a grounder from Cassie Kaelber. Dee Dee Caskey put a triple out to center to bring them both home and extend UIC's lead, 6-2. Wedl singled to bring in Caskey, and Ferguson followed with a single of her own, putting Wedl on third. A wild pitch got passed the catcher and allowed Wedl to run home, 8-2.
- The Norse got one run in the top of the sixth after a leadoff triple came in to score off a single, 8-3, but the Flames turned a double play on the next batter to end the inning.
- Northern Kentucky's lineup was retired in order in the top of the seventh, handing the Flames the 8-3 victory.
Game Two Facts & Figures
- UIC once more had the edge in hits, 9-8. Samantha Ferguson once again had a multi-hit showing, going 2-for-4 in the finale. Maica Ingles also recorded a multi-hit showing, collecting a pair of hits. Kayla Wedl, Emma Crowley, Tara McElligott, Alannah Cran and Dee Dee Caskey each collected one hit in the night cap.
- McElligott and Caskey led the Flames with two RBIs each. Wedl, Crowley and Larisa Villa each picked up one RBI apiece.
- Wedl was the only Flame to score twice, while AnnMarie Sillas, McElligott, Cran, Ingles, Spinks and Caskey all scored once.
- Miranda Gomez started in the circle, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing two earned runs off four hits. Christina Toniolo came in to pitch the remaining 4.1 innings and earned the win, improving to 8-4 on the season. Toniolo allowed one earned run off four hits during her time in the circle.
