Flames Dominate Youngstown State, 7-0

UIC sweeps Penguins for first time since 2012

CHICAGO – UIC solidified its position atop the Horizon League standings Saturday morning by roasting the Youngstown State Penguins at XS Tennis Village, 7-0.

The victory helped UIC extend its overall winning streak to nine, and its unbeaten streak in Horizon League play to five.

YSU entered the match with an unblemished 6-0 record in conference play, while the Flames had won all four of their previous conference matches this spring. Saturday marked the first time that the Penguins lost 7-0 this season, and the first time losing by that margin to an Horizon League opponent since UIC accomplished the feat on April 15, 2012.

Doubles Highlights
The Penguins claimed a victory at No. 1 with a 6-2 win against UIC's top pairing of Agnes Gustafsson and Tamara Malazonia.

Head coach Shannon Tully split up the reigning Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week, Ana Jover and Marina Hermanny de Figueirido, and it paid dividends for the home team. Jover paired with Lucie Prochazkova at No. 2 to notch a 7-5 triumph, meaning the point would be decided at No. 3. Hermanny de Figueirido and teammate Nell Arendt were in control early before YSU roared back. The Flames figured out a way to be the last ones standing as they won the match, 7-6 (9), to inject even more energy into the team, and more importantly, claim the doubles point.

Singles Highlights
Arendt set the tone at No. 6, making quick work of her foe in a 6-0, 6-1 route. At the fourth position, Jover won her first set with relative ease, 6-2, before falling behind 4-3 in the second. The Spaniard roared back to win three straight games and earn the third point of the day for UIC.

Jover leads the team with 13 wins in singles play this season, improving to 13-2. It was her eighth win at No. 4.

Malazonia, playing in the top singles spot for the 15th time in 16 matches this season, rolled to a 6-3 win in her opening set. The second was very much a back and forth affair, but in the end the Flames' freshman secured a 7-5 victory, clinching an eventual team win for UIC. Moments later, Prochazkova polished off a win at No. 3, 7-5, 6-4, thwarting off a YSU comeback in set two.

After dropping her first set at the second spot in the lineup 6-4, Gustafsson came out aggressively and pounded her way to an eventual three-set victory, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Finally, Georgia Gulin split sets at No. 5, but team victory already in hand, she played a 10-point tiebreaker for the third. The senior succeeded with ease, winning 10-3. Gulin is near Jover for team-high wins with 12 of her own in 14 opportunities.
