YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The No. 3 seed UIC Softball team (27-21, 23-11 HL) shut down No. 2 seed Oakland (24-15, 23-11 HL) in the first round of the Horizon League Championship on Thursday, defeating the Golden Grizzlies 5-1 to advance to the Semifinals.

Kayla Wedl was up to her usual antics, batting 3-for-4 in the game with a homer and two RBI, while freshman
Dee Dee Caskey scored the go-ahead run for the Flames with her second home run of the season in the top of the fifth.
Game Highlights
- Wedl batted her 14th home run of the season to get the Flames on the board first in the top of the third, 1-0.
- A single and a double allowed the Golden Grizzlies to tie it in their half of the third, 1-1.
- Caskey put the Flames back in the lead with a two-out solo home run in the top of the fifth, 2-1.
- Samantha Ferguson led off the top of the sixth with a single, and she moved all the way to third after a grounder from Maddie Spinks and a passed ball. An error by Oakland's third baseman forced by Cassie Kaelber allowed her to score and gave the Flames an insurance run, 3-1.
- The Flames plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to grow their lead, 5-1. Maica Ingles led off with a single, Caskey reached on a bunt and Wedl singled to score Ingles, 4-1. An Oakland error allowed Caskey to come in from third, 5-1.
- Starter Marley Hanlon fanned the first two Oakland batters to start the bottom of the seventh, and the final batter popped up to Wedl at shortstop to secure the 5-1 win for the Flames.

- Wedl led for the Flames with her 3-for-4 performance. Ferguson also finished with a multi-hit performance, recording two hits in the contest.
- Wedl and Caskey combined for UIC's three RBI on the day.
- Caskey was the only Flame to score more than once, while Wedl, Ferguson and Ingles each scored once.
- Hanlon was lights out in the circle for the Flames, pitching her seventh complete game of the season to improve to 10-5 on the season. The senior allowed a mere one earned run off just five hits while striking out three.
