CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (26-19) came up just short of the win on Friday, dropping an extra-inning battle against city-rival DePaul (23-9), 4-3 (11). The Flames took the lead three separate times, but the Blue Demons proved resilient, responding to each of UIC's runs with a run of their own until they were able to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 11th with two singles and a hit-by-pitch.
Highlights vs. DePaul
- The Flames scored in their first at bat, as Kayla Wedl led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Maica Ingles and came home on a single from Tara McElligott, 1-0.
- The Blue Demons tied it in their half of the first off a bases-loaded infield single, 1-1.
- UIC took back the lead in the top of the third. Ingles drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a flyout from McElligott and scored on an error forced by Maddie Spinks, 2-1.
- DePaul once more brought the game to a tie, batting a one-out single and an RBI triple in the bottom of the third, 2-2.
- Neither team scored after the first three innings, forcing the game into extras.
- After six scoreless innings, the Flames finally broke the scoreless streak in the top of the 10th to take back the lead once again. Isabelle Garcia led off with a single and was replaced on the bags by pinch runner McKennah Ulrey. Dee Dee Caskey laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Ulrey to second, and Wedl forced a Blue Demon error to put runners on the corners for Maica Ingles, who reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Ulrey to score, 3-2.
- The Blue Demons once again responded, scoring a run in the bottom of the 10th off a bases-loaded single, 3-3.
- DePaul picked up two singles and a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the 11th to walk it off, 4-3.
Facts & Figures vs. DePaul
- DePaul led in hits, 12-7. Cassie Kaelber finished with a multi-hit performance to lead the Flames, while Spinks, Wedl, McElligott, Garcia and Caskey each finished with one hit apiece.
- Spinks, McElligott and Ingles shared UIC's three RBIs.
- Wedl, Ingles and Ulrey scored UIC's three runs
- Marley Hanlon pitched the duration and took the loss, dealing 10.1 innings for a new career high. The senior allowed four earned runs off 12 hits while striking out two.
