GREENSBORO, N.C. – Recent graduate
Jacob Key added one more accolade to his storied career Wednesday (June 23) afternoon as the pitcher earned the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award at the pitcher position.
Â
Key becomes the first player in program history to earn the Gold Glove, which has been awarded on a yearly basis since 2007. Key was the only Horizon League player named to this year's Gold Glove Team.
Â
The Gold Glove Awards are presented annually by Rawlings and selected by the ABCA. These prestigious awards are chosen by the ABCA All-America Committee for each Division.
Â
A native of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Key ended his illustrious UIC career as the program's all-time leader in strikeouts with 266. The right-hander finished first all-time in games started (55), third in wins (25) and second in innings pitched (346.0).
Â
Key was selected to the All-Horizon League First Team this past season after finishing third in the league in ERA, third in opposing batting average and second in innings pitched. The starter's seven pickoffs was tops in the conference while his opposing average and innings pitched in conference games only also led all Horizon League pitchers.
Â
Key fell one out shy of becoming the 11
th player in program history to throw a no-hitter on April 16 en route to being named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week. After throwing eight innings of no-hit baseball, Key recorded the first two outs of the ninth before allowing an infield single. The righty ended the game on his terms, picking the runner off first to finish the complete-game effort.
