Flames Collide With Norse Wednesday Night

UIC Has Not Allowed A Goal in Last Three Matches

9/28/2021 3:40:00 PM

UIC will put its three-game winning streak on the line against Northern Kentucky at Flames Field Wednesday night.

Not only have the Flames won three in a row, but all three wins have come via shutout.  Two came against Horizon League foes, where UIC is now 2-1 and in second place.

Admission is free, and fans are expected to abide by UIC's outdoor event masking policy.  The Flames are undefeated at home this year and are 26-2-3 in their last 31 home matches, but Northern Kentucky has one of the two wins against them.  That came late last season and enabled the Norse to clinch the #1 seed in the Horizon League tournament.

"NKU is the defending Horizon League regular season champion," Sean Phillips noted, "and they got there by being tough to break down and being opportunistic in the run of play and on set pieces.  We will have to be ready to break them down, as well as continue to strive to improve in our attacking and defending on restarts on Wednesday."

The Flames were undefeated in the first four meetings with NKU once the Norse joined the Horizon League, but Northern Kentucky has won the last two matchups.  They enter play with a 1-2 conference record this season, following a double-overtime loss to Wright State on a 110th-minute goal.  Jesse Randall and Dylan Bufton are the conference's top two goal scorers with six and five, respectively.

Nkusuwila Zulu made his return to the starting lineup, and netted the game-winning goal in the 18th minute against Oakland on Saturday.  Andres Vasquez had six saves and was named the Horizon League's Defensive Player of the Week.  It was his fifth shutout of the season, which ranks him fourth in the nation.

Wednesday's game starts at 7:00 pm and can be seen on ESPN+.
