Flames Sweep Phoenix, Remain Perfect in Horizon League Play

UIC moved to 3-0 in conference action Tuesday with a sweep of Green Bay

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team remained perfect in Horizon League play Tuesday evening with a 3-0 sweep of Green Bay in the first of three consecutive home matches for the Flames.
 
The Flames defense kept the Phoenix attack at bay all night, limiting Green Bay to a .088 hitting percentage for the match.
 
Paola Santiago recorded her second-straight double-double with 10 kills (tied for the match high) to go along with 11 digs. Martina Delucchi was the other Flame to register 10 kills while matching her season high with four aces.
 
Sohila Wafeek ran the offense to the tune of 33 assists, a match high. Jackie Yau had a career night for the Flames, finishing with a career-high eight kills on no errors and a .571 hitting percentage.
 
UIC remains at home for its next two matches, returning to action Thursday (Sept. 30) against Wright State.
 
How It Happened – First Set
  • Green Bay struck first, jumping out to a 7-3 lead and prompting the Flames to call timeout.
  • The Phoenix remained in the lead until UIC stormed in front with an 8-1 run to take a 19-17 advantage. Delucchi played a big part of the run, serving three consecutive aces a to put the Flames in front by a pair.
  • With a 23-22 lead, Yau and Delucchi ended the set with back-to-back kills from Wafeek to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
How It Happened – Second Set
  • A block by Zahria Woodard and Mikala Henderson gave the Flames an early 5-2 lead and forcing a Green Bay timeout.
  • UIC did not trail for the remainder of the set but Green Bay kept things close, tying the score at 13-all. A Green Bay attack error and Abigail Sunga ace put UIC back in front by two and the Flames would hold at least a two-point margin the rest of the set.
  • A Green Bay attack error gave UIC set point at 24-18 and another Phoenix error a few points later closed out the 25-20 victory for the Flames.
 
How It Happened – Third Set
  • UIC jumped on Green Bay early, scoring the first four points and forced the visitors to call timeout. Another mini run by the Flames made it 7-1 and Green Bay had to burn its second timeout.
  • The lead grew all the way up to 9-1 and the Flames maintained its cushion for the remainder of the set.
  • Green Bay tried to make things close at the end, pulling within a pair at 24-22, but a Yau kill ended the set and the match in favor of the Flames.
 
Facts and Figures
  • While Santiago recorded yet another double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, Delucchi fell one dig shy with her 10-kill, 9-dig performance.
  • Yau, who had two kills on the season a year ago, had a career-high eight in the match.
  • UIC owned a slim 7-6 advantage in aces.
