YOUNGSTOWN, OH. – UIC (2-10, 1-6 Horizon) fell to the top team in the Horizon League in Youngstown State (15-1, 9-0 Horizon), 69-46.
Kristian Young returned to play for the first time since Dec. 18. Young scored ten points on the day, a team-high, along with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals in her return.
Jaida McCloud scored seven points and recorded seven rebounds.
The UIC Flames came out hot in the first quarter of play, scoring the first points of the game behind a Young assist to
Ky Dempsey-Toney on the inside. The Flames kept up with the top team in the Horizon throughout the first quarter behind some strong effort and determination of the team. UIC turned the ball over eight times but still managed to keep it close, shooting 66% from the field and holding the Penguins to 27.8%.
The Youngstown State offense began to click in the second quarter of play, while the Flames struggled to find their footing. UIC's offense turned the ball over five times in the quarter, but the momentum swayed in favor of the Penguins, as they began to make shots.
In the second half, UIC and Youngstown kept it close, scoring 23 points to Youngstown State's 28, but the Penguins' 26-point second quarter was a mountain too high to overcome.
The Flames will head to Moon Township, Pa. to face Robert Morris at 12 p.m. cst on Sunday afternoon.
