UIC Swimming and Diving held its Senior Day meet Saturday at Flames Natatorium. The scheduled opponent, Horizon League rival Green Bay, had to withdraw due to Covid protocols, turning the meet into an intrasquad affair.
Before the meet began, seniors Josh Dellorto,
Maddie Hawker,
Lauren Johnson,
Beth Kelzer,
Felix Lafortune,
Kyle Lewarchick,
Cydney Liebenberg,
Christina Neri,
Anna Scovill,
Sydney Tobias, and
Lizzie Zeller were honored in front of family and friends.
Several of the seniors were among the team's top performers. Less than 24 hours after competing against Valparaiso, the Flames swam with dedication and determination, matching up against their teammates and friends.
UIC's divers, who did not make the trip to Valparaiso since the Beacons do not have a diving program, returned to action as well. Liebenberg and Lafortune, along with
Ciara McCliment, Hunter Trautman, and
Cole Tremewan, dove in the coach-scored event.
After the meet,
Tim Loeffler – noting that over 40 Division I meets were cancelled this weekend due to Covid – thanked the team, parents and families, and especially the seniors. "This group of seniors has led this team through a set of circumstances nobody could have imagined," he said. "Over the last two and a half years, we've had seasons starting and stopping, seasons shifting into the spring, and these seniors have been vital to the success we have had over the last few seasons. I can't thank them enough for that.
"This team has been relentless. Every opportunity they have had, they've taken advantage of. Seniors, thank you for everything you've done for this program."
The Flames are scheduled to visit crosstown rival UChicago for the final dual meet of the season at the end of the month.
