@UIC_WBB Fall On Sunday Despite Defensive Efforts

The Flames Fall In The Regular Season-Series To IUPUI

CHICAGO – The UIC Flames (2-13, 1-9 Horizon) fell to the IUPUI Jaguars (12-5, 9-3 Horizon), 68-47. The Flames were led by Kristian Young, who scored a team-high 16 points, recorded five rebounds, and three assists. The Flames battled in their second game against the Jaguars but could not overcome the incredible shooting of IUPUI. Justice Gee, Bailey Lutes, and Keona Schenck all played key roles in the defensive efforts by the Flames in the Sunday afternoon game.

The Flames came out with impressive energy and focus early on in the first quarter of play. The Flames put up their best effort throughout the quarter, pushing the Jaguars into eight turnovers in the first quarter of play. Despite the impressive defense, IUPUI capitalized on the few shots that they managed to get up, shooting 77.8% from the floor. In the second quarter, the Flames impressed even more than the previous.

The Flames once again forced the Jaguars into high turnover numbers, with seven on the quarter, and the momentum felt in favor of UIC throughout. The Flames still finished down on the half, but they had gained the respect of their opponents and impressed those watching with their emphatic effort. UIC was able to score 15 points in the second quarter as well, despite a poor shooting percentage from the field. The Flames put up nearly half of their points on free throws.

Out of the half, the Jaguars came out ready to compete against the Flames. UIC struggled against the rejuvenated energy of IUPUI, with the momentum heavily in their favor at the end of the quarter. The Flames started to find their rhythm in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too much to overcome for UIC. The Flames' efforts fell short, as they fell in the regular-season series against IUPUI.

UIC's next contest is Cleveland State. That game is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 27, at 6:30 in Credit Union 1 Arena.
