Flames Top Sycamores, Post Seventh Shutout

Sophia Jaime Scored the Game-Winning Goal

UIC dominated the run of play, setting season highs in shots and shots on goal, and came away with a 1-0 win over Indiana State at Flames Field Thursday night.  Sophia Jaime's 55th-minute marker was the only tally the Flames needed, as they held the Sycamores to four shots, with none going on goal.

Scoring Summary
  • Jaime scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season after setting up shop at the right corner of the box.  She took a pass and dribbled centrally, pausing just before reaching the semicircle to unleash a shot that skipped past the keeper to the low right corner.

From the outset, UIC displayed a relentless effort to drive the ball toward Indiana State's goal, with the purpose of firing a high quality shot.  They earned their first of 12 corner kicks – also a season best – in the fourth minute and created two shots from the chance.

Indiana State made the Flames hold their breath in the seventh minute, when a shot rolled toward the open right side of the goal but stayed outside the post.  From then on, they did not challenge Lauren Keiser, who earned her seventh shutout of the season.  Indiana State was the second team that the Flames have held without a try on goal.

The rest of the first half featured tries from, among others, Megan Bowman and Makena Shaw.  Bowman put a header on goal and Shaw had a couple of open looks.  Each of them finished the contest with five shots, two on goal, as did Riley Collett.  Collett's beautiful cross late in the first half brought the crowd to its feet before it continued bounding past the closest Flame.  A 44th minute corner kick ended up rattling around deep in the box, but all the ricochets went away from goal.

Jaime took control after halftime.  She had a shot saved high against the frame soon before she found the back of the net.  Her three shots on goal were a personal best, and a game high.

Chances from Riley Collett and Chopper Carriere represented some of UIC's best chances at doubling their lead.  Keiser initiated a pretty build-up from the back that culminated in a Shaw header that stayed over the crossbar.  UIC was especially adept at negating Sycamore counters, as a Flame seemed to always be in the right spot to break up a pass or win a 1-on-1 battle for the ball.

With the win, UIC remained in sole possession of fourth place in the Missouri Valley with just one game remaining.  A win against Southern Illinois on Sunday would guarantee the Flames a top-four spot in the final standings, a first round bye in the conference tournament, and a home game in the quarterfinals.
