City Rivalry With Chicago State to be Renewed Monday Night

Flames Head South to Take On Cougars

11/13/2022 1:00:00 PM

UIC will look to make it two wins in a row to start the season, as the Flames make a short road trip across town to take on Chicago State Monday night.

The Flames have not started a season 2-0 since 2015-16.  That year, Chicago State was the opponent in game two.  UIC's win was part of an active seven game winning streak over the Cougars.

The Ashleen Bracey era got off to a winning start after a 52-50 win over IUPUI last Monday.  Josie Filer had 20 points and the game-clinching steal.  Jaida McCloud had 11 rebounds, and Kristian Young's all-around performance included eight boards, six assists, and three steals.  A 2-0 debut for Bracey would also mark the program's first two-game winning streak since December 16-18, 2017.

UIC and Chicago State have squared off 26 times over the years, but not since 2019.  The Flames are 10-1 in road games against the Cougars.

Monday's game will start at 5:30 p.m. and can be seen with a subscription to FloHoops.

BUCKETS ON FILE
  • Josie Filer had a game high 20 points, including the go-ahead basket late in the fourth quarter, in UIC's season opener at IUPUI.
  • Filer also had a steal with three seconds to go, snuffing IUPUI's chance to tie the game.
  •  She added five rebounds in the game against the Jaguars. She made nine of 14 field goals.
STREAKS ENDED/STREAK EXTENDED
  • The Flames snapped a 20-game losing streak dating to last season with their win over IUPUI Nov. 7.
  • The season-opening win in Indianapolis was UIC's first opening day win away from home in their last four opportunities. It also marked the team's first 1-0 start since 2018-19.
  • Ashleen Bracey became the fourth straight Flames coach to win their UIC debut.
IRON WOMEN
  • Sara Zabrecky played 38 minutes, and Kristian Young played 37, against IUPUI last Monday.
  • Four of UIC's five starters logged significant minutes, as Josie Filer had 34 and Jaida McCloud had 33.
  • The Flames had three players average over 32 minutes per game last season. Keona Schenck (34.5), Kristian Young (32.8), and Jaida McCloud (32.5) logged the most minutes on the team. Schenck was second in the conference, and 10th in the nation, in minutes played.
