Flames Collect Fourth Consecutive Sweep Sunday Afternoon

UIC wins its third match in as many days with 3-0 sweep over Murray State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Playing in their third match in as many days, the UIC volleyball team picked up its fourth sweep in a row with a 3-0 victory over Murray State Sunday afternoon.

The match was rescheduled to Sunday after the original match, scheduled for Nov. 4 at Murray State, was postponed due to a campus-wide power outage. Due to travel considerations, Sunday's contest was a neutral site match played at Indiana State.

With the win, the Flames lock up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Missouri Valley Conference Championship.

Paola Santiago was 1-of-3 Flames to record double-digit kills, finishing with a match-high 14. Mikala Henderson and Martina Delucchi added 10 kills each. Jackie Yau picked up six on a .556 hitting percentage and Zahria Woodard added five to account for all 45 of UIC's kills in the match.

Sohila Wafeek dished out 36 of UIC's 40 assists while Jaclyn Obelna led the defensive efforts with 13 digs. The Flames dominated the net, owning a 12-3 advantage in blocks.

Trailing by a 14-13 margin in the opening set, the Flames ripped off five unanswered points to take a 18-15 lead. An ace from Delucchi and a pair of UIC blocks aided the scoring run. The margin would hold as the Flames claimed a 25-22 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The advantage grew to 2-0 with a convincing 25-19 victory. UIC built a commanding 20-12 lead following a 4-0 run and closed out the set to pull within a set of victory.

It was a battle until the end in the third set, which featured 14 tied scores. The two teams were tied at 23-all before Delucchi handled the final two points. The outside hitter connected to give UIC match point at 24-23 and then stepped up to the service line and delivered an ace to seal the match.

UIC closes out the regular season on Wednesday at Valparaiso. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
