CHICAGO – Behind a career night from
Jace Carter, the UIC men's basketball team (2-1) never trailed in a 67-60 victory over Jacksonville State (1-1) Monday evening inside Credit Union 1 Arena.
Carter scored a career-high 22 points while matching his career best with 10 rebounds to collect his first double-double of his collegiate career. The 22 points marked Carter's first-career game with 20 or more. The guard finished 8-for-15 from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, while four of his game-high 10 rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Despite an off-night shooting,
Tre Anderson scored 20 points thanks to 15 makes from the free throw line. Anderson's effort at the charity stripe hadn't been done in nearly nine years, as the last UIC player to make 15 or more free throws in a contest was Kelsey Barlow vs. Wagner on Nov. 27, 2013 when he finished 17-for-19 from the line. The guard also led the offense with five of UIC's 13 assists in the game.
Jaden Brownell added nine points thanks to 3-for-3 shooting from beyond the arc while
Jalen Jackson and
Toby Okani had seven points each.
The UIC lead grew to as many as 10 in the first half, but Jacksonville State slowly brought the game back level at 17-all just past the midway point of the opening 20 minutes of action. Okani put the Flames in front for good with 8:47 to play, as the Flames would build a five-point lead heading into the halftime break.
The Flames maintained its lead throughout the second half, but the Gamecocks battled back to make it a one-possession game in the closing minutes. A 3-pointer from D King pulled Jacksonville State within two with 29 seconds left, but the Flames would go 5-of-6 from the line in the final 26 seconds of action to seal the win.
UIC hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to New York City for the Tom Konchalski Classic, hosted by Fordham. The Flames will play three contests over four days, ranging from Nov. 19-22.
