The night at the Jones Center across town ended in victory for the UIC Women's Basketball program (2-0) Monday night against the Chicago State Cougars (0-2), 87-62.
The Flames haven't started the season 2-0 since the 2015-2016 season. As both wins have been on the road, the Flames have accomplished something that the team has not done since the 1979-1980 season.
Five members of the Flames found themselves in double digits. Leading the way was junior Jaida McCloud, who was on the verge of a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing nine boards. Josie Filer scored 16 in over 21 minutes of action. Danyel Middleton, Marta Gomez and Lindsey Rodgers each scored 11 in the game.
After most of the the first quarter was trading point-for-point, the Flames began to distance themselves with an 8-0 run at the end of the quarter, starting with a free-throw made by McCloud, followed by a three-pointer by Middleton who then stole the ball on the inbound pass to find Filer inside for a lay-up.
Turning their lead into a multi-possession game, the Flames kept their momentum in the second quarter. The Flames capitalized on their advantage at the freethrow line. UIC made 22 of 32 free throws while Chicago State made only 9.
Leading 41-24 at half, the Flames kept CSU's Tae'lor Willard (22 points) and Laura Segues (13 points) at-bay. The Flames increased their lead, outscoring the Cougars 29-24 in the third, and then 17-14 in the fourth quarter.
This is the Flames eighth consecutive win in this crosstown rivalry.
Filer finished her night going 6 for 7, landing all 4 of her free throws. Sara Zabrecky shot 75% from behind the perimeter. The Flames dominated mostly in the paint however, outscoring the Cougars 40-16.
The Flames return back home to the Credit Union 1 Arena Wednesday when they host the Milwaukee Panthers, tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
