UIC will play three games in three days, at the Hostilo Hoops Classic in Savannah, Ga. starting Monday. The Flames will put their 3-0 start to the season to the test against Fairleigh Dickinson, Davidson, and Austin Peay.
The Flames used strong last-minute defense to hold off Milwaukee, 44-43, on Wednesday to continue their undefeated streak and end a 15-game skid in the rivalry with the Panthers.
Danyel Middleton led all scorers with her second straight 11-point game.
Each game in Savannah will be the first ever against those opponents. FDU and Austin Peay enter the week with 2-1 records, while Davidson is 1-2. FDU has a trio of double-digit scorers. Davidson's two losses came to ACC foes Duke and Maryland. Yamia Johnson of Austin Peay averages 18.3 points per game.
The four teams are in a round-robin bracket. Monday's game against the Knights will start at 10:30 a.m. Central, and the following two games will start at 1 p.m. Chicago time. All three games can be seen on Event Live+.
With a win against Fairleigh Dickinson, UIC would post their best start to a season since 2008-09. It would also be the team's first four game winning streak since 2017.
WINNING THE CLOSE ONES
- Two of UIC's three wins to date have come by a single possession - a two-point win over IUPUI, and a one-point margin over Milwaukee.
- The Flames have won five straight games decided by five points or less, dating to Dec. 19, 2020.
- UIC is 7-1 in such games going back to the 2018- 19 season.
- Both of UIC's close wins this season were clinched on the defensive end. They forced a turnover in each instance, not allowing either opponent to attempt a potential tying or winning shot.
MAKING OURS, DENYING YOURS
- UIC is shooting 46.4% from the field overall, and 42.9% from 3-point distance.
- The Flames are one of only 34 teams in the nation to be shooting over 40% in both categories.
- UIC is holding its opponents to sub-40% marks in overall and 3-point shooting. They are one of just 26 teams in the country to be above 40% offensively, and below 40% defensively, in both categories.
VALLEY ACCOLADES
- Josie Filer had a game high 20 points, including the go-ahead free throws late in the fourth quarter, in UIC's season opener at IUPUI.
- She was named Missouri Valley Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 14, following that performance against the Jaguars.
- She is UIC's leading scorer (14.7 ppg).
- Filer also had a steal with three seconds to go, snuffing IUPUI's chance to tie the game.
- She added five rebounds in the game against the Jaguars. She made nine of 14 field goals.
